Well here is a guitar #6 that I finished last week. It was my first experience using KTM-9. I used Doolin’s instructions as an outline for the finishing process. It looked something like this.

-filled with epoxy, System 3
-light it dry overnight and lightly sand
-first set of coats the next day
-sand with 600 3M no-load paper
-spray with DA and apply the next set of coats
-level, DA, and the final set of coats.
-let it cure for about 2 weeks
-sand to 1500 and then buff on the pedestal buffer
-buffed using medium and fine compounds

I am very pleased with the results. The KTM was easy to apply and went on crystal clear. When it was all done I went back to look for any blueish tint and could not find any. So I will likely be sticking to this finish for a while.

The back and sides are Cocobolo. Top is bearclaw Englemann. Binding and rosette are Snakewood. Neck is Mahogany, Maple and Coco.







I gained a great deal of respect for our friends who do inlay and are good at it. Not that I didn't respect them before, but I now really know how hard it is to do a good inlay. The rose was my first realy attempt at an inlay. It turned out okay, but I know I have a lot to learn.



This is also the first guitar that I have started and finished since joining the forum. Thanks to everone for your great advice.

Josh, did you brush or spray? I'm getting ready to try KTM 9 for the first time and I have to brush it.

Purrr-teee! Understated and flashy at the same time! That's a balance not many have achieved.

It's interesting, don't ya think, that there seems to have developed an OLF "standard" neck design--laminated, with a back-headstock veneer and a volute?

Well my highspeed internet connection is running at the speed of an old dial-up connection today. I don’t know why, but I haven’t been able to get back on the forum until now.

Thanks for all the kind words. It is really encouraging. Especially because it seems that the last week or two I just haven’t been able to do things right. I’m working on a batch of guitars for the Canadian Guitar fest and if something can go wrong it probably has on this batch of guitars. I now have a good understanding of why so many people make it in the business. But there is not much else to do put pick yourself up and try again...and again..and.. until things go right.

The finished was sprayed with an HVLP system. I do not have any experience with brushing. However I have a builder friend here in Canada who has started using it and is brushing, I’ve seen it on his guitars and mandolins and it looks really good. It may take some experimenting but I’m sure you can make it work just as well.

Josh That is one fine looking instrument. The inlay looks great to me. Finish is beautiful. Snakewood bindings look beautiful too.
