So, there I was, thundering up I-95 from Florida, headed to ASIA on a mission to increase my meagre store of wisdom and smartness, and (not least) to enrich the wood and tool vendors, when...

The lights flicker...

The smell of burning insulation pervades the cabin of my steed, growing stronger...

I get off the interstate in Florence SC, and pull a battery cable to keep the whole thing from going up in flames while I wait for the truck.

That was yesterday. Today, $821 (so far), but they say I'll be thundering again Tuesday, somewhat lighter in the pockets.

And I'll bet you drove to save the cost of an airline ticket, huh?

Very Bad News!! Monty, I grew up in Florence SC for the first 18 years of my life. It's a horrible place to live & I'll bet it's a worse place to be stuck with car repairs. Is it humid enough for you? The place is actually surrounded by swamps & the humidity & summer heat combine to make it terribly unpleasant for humans and not very good for wood or tools either. Good Luck!!

Nice people, the ones I've met. There is a certain density to the air, though.

Monty,
That's a bummer no doubt about it but your safety is what's important. It must be something about Florence South Carolina because I had a break down there too. Seemed a radiator hose decided to spring a leak and when your 19 and don't have 2 nickels to rub together it makes things interesting. So with a little electrical and duct tape I managed to get to Orlando Florida where I replaced the hose.

The credit cards make ALL the difference.

Internet access helps too.

See you soon.

My late Grandfather always use to tell me the story of using a toothpick to stop a radiator leek, Steve, your story took me back
