I am bubbling over today!!

I was out in the shop working and happend to look out the french door of the shop to see a brand new F250 pulling out of my drive way. I came inside to check the answering machine and found a message to call these people, so I called them right back. They turned around and came back to the shop and looked around for a few minutes, played one of my guitars and then placed an order for   3 of them!!!

Looks like I will be busy for another month or two worth of building Dreadnaughts, but I dont mind a bit!  On top of that, the three they wanted me to build are not the not the base model guitars, they are some of the upper models.

I know I'm not supposed to say this, but I'm going to do it anyway...I cant help it today.

God is good to me!

I have a check laying over on the bar from work completed yesterday. It's nice to have some coin rolling in and especially three at one whack.

Let's see that is 600 hours of work......

I know these people that came today. They heard about me building guitars through word of mouth and decided to come take a look. These guys are ... how can I say this..... they are extremely comfortable  and money is not a problem for them at all.

Anyway, I gave them the price for building the base line model, and they said they wanted to give them as Christmas presents to their top sales people for the year. I have until the first week of December to get the guitars built. The only thing they told me is that they definitely dont want a base line model and to use my best judgement for the guitars. Ive got to dream up something good for these guys because as soon as the guitars are given out, I *KNOW* there will be more sales to their group down the line. They hang around in circles of people that can't be outdone  One of them bought a house from one of their buddies for a little over a million, then tore it down immediately and built one worth a little over 4 million just to tick him off. It has elevators in it

Getting back to the guitars, I've now got to cogitate for a while and decide what kind of wood I am going to build them out of... got any ideas?

Nah, nobody around here ever has an opinion about woods or anything like that.  You're just stuck buddy, you'll have to figure it all out by yourself.

If price does not matter,

I would use some presentation grade zircote, brazilian, and then something like macassar or some of that pretty australian stuff 

Jeepers - how do you get three done in less than 4 months?

You work really hard for 2 1/2 to 3 months then wait a month for the finish to cure.

It is really none of my business, and I am happy for you that you got the commission, but I don't understand why these people are ordering fancy custom made guitars; the recipients may actually be sales people who I assume most likely don't even play, is that correct? Very strange... At any rate, I am sure BobC or any of our fine sponsors can help you out with the wood selection!

So put their corporate logo on your label...or perhaps some special fretboard inlay that is "top salesperson" specific, etc.

I just built 4 of them in the last 6 weeks. The finish isnt on them yet, but they are ready for finishing. More on that to come later as I have something new up my sleve.

I have soent a *LOT* of time and effort into building jigs and buying the right tools to build guitars, so getting them built isnt a problem.

2 of the 4 guitars I am currently building are commissions and one of the guitars is going to carry a really high price because of the wood it is built out of and it's local historical value. It may be a while before I sell it, but that isnt a problem.

 the people recieving thse guitars do play guitar, so it is a very thoughtful gift from someone that can afford it. Both the givers and recievers of these guitars are people that can afford anything they want.... literally. When people get to this stage in life, they look for things that you cant buy at stores and things that are hand crafted. The givers of these gifts are going to extremes to give their top sales people something that they can use and also something that shows thoutfulness on the part of the giver. It is not a token gift from a "corporate gift" catalog. The guys that drove out here today made a 2 hour round trip to come visit me and make sure that their thoughts on giving these gifts were correct. Heck, I worked for a company for 25 years, a lot of that time in management, and when my 25 year service award came, it was a cheap tie tack with the company logo and a tiny ruby on it. Somehow that just didnt seem right to me. When you think about it, it is the perfect gift for the person who has everything and is VERY thoughtful on the part of the giver also.

Bill, putting the corporate logo on the fretboard is an excellent idea!! Thanks for the idea! I can easily make this happen!!

How about inlaying the name of each recipient in the headstock? or on the lower bout? or anywhere on the neck?  Or, wherever you may?

Congrats Ken,

I think it's great that you've made 3 sells all at once and even better, that they're pretty much letting you build them how you want to build them. Should be a fun and rewarding experience for you.

I like the company logo idea as well as the idea of each recipient's name. In my opinion, those two combined would make a very special gift and if you nail it, it could seal the deal for many more sales down the road from the same company.

I'm sure you'll do great Ken. Just have fun doing it, which it sounds like you definitely will.

Please post some progress pictures for the rest of us to see.
