The beginner again
For bolt on necks, what hardware do you use?
Where do you buy it?
LMI has a set the uses an insert in the neck. The bolt doesnt thread directly
into the neck. Is this strong enough.

LMI's are great, but expensive...I used regular hardware store ones with a 1/4" cap screw, until John Mayes gave me one of his...they too come from the harware store...when I get back home, I'll post a picture of one for you.

A lot of people use threaded inserts and I have too but I switched to barrel nuts (aka cross dowels) and bolts on the last 10 or so.

To me a cross dowel and a barrel nut are two different items.

I get the brass threaded inserts and bolts at Woodcraft. If I recall correctly it was about $7.00 or so for 10 of each.

I don't like the brass inserts. Their threads are too small. The zinc ones are slightly tapered, have bigger threads and you drive them in with a hex wrench. I've never had one of the zinc ones strip.

I use the same ones that Robbie shows, the *only* advice I have is to place those barrel bolts as far back on your tenon as you can to give it a more solid piece of wood to pull into. I deviate slightly from cumpiano and place mine about 1/8" from the face of the cheeks to give them as mucn tenon to pull on as possible.

The reason is the very first guitar I built cracked at the tenon because I didn't give it enough meat to bite into and the wood split under the force.

I use the same type of barrel bolts as Robbie and a lot of the others, but I reinforce my tenons with a vertical Ash dowel that runs up the tenon and that the barrels bite into against its vertical grain. When I drill the cross holes for the barrels I make them so that the barrel cuts about a third of the way into the back of the dowel. I'd stick a picture up of a neck but I'm afraid I'm 10,000 miles from my guitars. But I do have a Macassar Ebony and a Sonokling Rosewood tree outside the hotel window! My fret board extension also bolts to a head block extension a la Dana.

Michael, Sonokling is a more specific name for good old Dalbergia latifolia, East Indian Rosewood. It's no good me getting my chainsaw out, both trees have got notices that say "Reserved for the Kinnaird Brothers"!

we might get to read of the eccentric anglo getting a number of strokes with the rattan... perhaps better just ot buy it. speaking of which, have you had time to explore the local market?
