So im not to that point yet BUT i would like to start thinking about it. Who do you finish with and how much $$?? I will probably try and finish the first guitar myself so i can know what im dealing with. but i know a lot of you send yours to the same person and he does a great job.

Ok! my Standard finish is either KTM9 or an optional French polish finish. I also offer Cat polyurethane farmed out for now.

Oh and I also offer Hybrid KTM9 back and sides with French polished tops.

French polish exclusively.

Pre-cat conversion varnish.  Level sand 60 minutes after shooting, buff after a week.  Crystal clear, hard as nails.

haha ok ok thanks all : ) let me re ask this in a different way. IF one were to send there guitar out to get finish, Who would you recomend (other than yourself ) and how much would they charge.

PS. as i post this, i am about to go into my bathroom and put some KTM9 on a banjo (no jokes), i must say for my first try...well ok... 10th try on the same thing, its starting 2 look good.

Nah, I think Rick is right.  Your sentence ends with a preposition.  Sort of like "Why did you bring that book you were going to read to me out of up for?"

I'm in Australia, and we have a catalyzed lacquer here called Mirortone. They've added some sort of acid to it that helps it cure and the hardness etc. Cabinet makers love it because it hold up to all kinds of abuse, yet easy to apply.

It's beautiful to spray and polishes like a dream. I'm putting the finishing touches on one that I'm building and will post photo's soon.

I've been an automotive spray painter for over 30 years so it's a no brainer for me to finish my own guitars. If I were to send it out to be sprayed I would expect to pay between $200-$300. Learn to do it yourself. There's just no satisfaction when someone comments on the finish and you have to tell them that you sublet it.

My suggestion to anyone who's thinking about farming out finishing is to seek out and closely examine some guitars finished by any finisher you're considering hiring. Don't take anybody else's word for it; only your own eyes can tell you whether a finisher's work meets your approval.

It's "what" rather than "who", and I've used french polish on two guitars and love the stuff.

Tony Ferguson for me. He can finish it as good as anyone in the business.
