Excuse me, Bob, but are you just going to leave it with a popular name that may be one among many, or be used for more than one species? The wood I know of that is sometimes called "Brazilian ebony" is melanoxylon brauna, popularly also known as brauna. I have a set and it looks nothing like your photo (not just the wild grain in yours; also color, which is a dark grey with a hint of brown.

So how about telling us the scientific name of your wood?

Yeah, I saw a bunch of Brazilian Ebony the other day, and it looked nothing like that picture. There was no purplish orange or anything in it at all. No hint of figure either. My guess is that whoever sold it to Bob misinformed him. The stuff I saw was exactly as Howard describes.

I'll have to agree with Howard and Don, the Brazilian Ebony I've built with is brown and very homogeneous looking. I'll try to find a photo.

It made a great guitar, but it STINKS to high heaven! I had flu-like symptoms after resawing the stuff.

It could be wild or highly configured EIRosewood.

Bob Long's looks like wenge to me.

BobC.'s looks like Brazilian Rosewood. Maybe they called it B.Ebony to get it shipped out of the country.

Looks like cocobolo to me. Here's some "Raindrop Quilt" cocobolo that I have with very similar coloring:

I thought it looked like Cocobolo too, although it had that Zircote sort of sectioned grain line in it.  Maybe it's Zircobolo.

     It's MDF worked over with a phony wood squeegee! He dropped this thing on us then went on vacation knowing we'd beat some keyboards to death trying to figure it out!

You're right, Ron... The Brazilian Ebony looks just like Wenge but has tighter grain and much smaller pores.

They are somehow related, the Wenge is Millettia laurentii.
The Brazilian Ebony is Millettia stuhlmannii. But, I'm not sure how closely related that makes them.

Don it is definitely not Cocobolo.

Howard that's all I know right now but I will try to get the scientific name for it.

I'm sure Wenge is from Africa. The Brazilian Ebony I have came from a supplier who does a lot of biz with the flooring industry. Most of the flooring websites list Brazilian Ebony as one of their choices. It pretty much all looks like this pic from Lumber Liquidators.



I'm very interested in finding out more about the set you posted. Whatever it is... it's looks very cool!

Hey guys, I'm real new to this and all but I got a picture of S.E. Rosewood from Dynamic Hardwood out in Western Canada when I was hunting for "the set" for my dream guitar and it looks very very similar!

It wasn't posted on his web site, just a set he e-mailed me as I was looking for something different.  I'll try and scan it tomorrow and throw it up for you guys to look at.

By the way...the set I chose in the end was an incredible set of Honduran Rosewood from none other than "The Zootman" himself!
