Does the tapping method work on the small planes, like it does on the larger wooden planes, or are they too light.

Waddy, you can tap the little wedge planes just as you would the big ones. I don't use a hammer, I just thep the plane lightly against the bench; the iron itself to advance it or the heel of the body to retract it.

Here's one of mine next to a 10 mm Ibex:
