I have been using the blue painter's tape for masking my binding before color coats during finishing. I'm doing a carved top electric with faux binding, and I think that there is something better than what I have been using. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Blue 3M masking tape and thin green pinstriping tape, although I forget the brand.

Thanks the 3M blue is what I use, Is the green pinstriping tape an automotive product?

I avoid blue tape! I found it to be very reactive with KTM-9, It pited the finish on a buffed guitar so deep it wouldn't buff out.

I'm not sure if it does the same with other finishes, but, I just don't use it for anything anymore. The cheaper beige stuff seems to work fine.

If you're using the blue stuff only on bare wood, I guess it shouldn't hurt anything.

You're going to have to avoid just about everything with KTM-9 including rubberized bench mats...Sorry, but for a finish not to be able to hold up to masking tape shows just how inferior it is. There's a perfect example of how lame water based finishes are.

I use the 3M plastic fine line tape for binding and a cheap blue masking tape from the Reel Tape Company for just about anything else.

dyes can penetrate quite deep, aspecially into the grain of the flame figure.
so i'd considr also putting a tiny amount of sealer on the faux binding.

thats they way i've done it for the lst couple of guitars.

3M makes the light green fine line masking tape as well as the blue. They are both used in the automotive trade. The is a little thinner and probably less tack. Could be what you are looking for.

I have had 3M blue tape leave very slight crinkle marks in fairly well cured nitro... Unless I really need the extra stick, I use the green stuff. When in doubt, dull the tape by sticking it to your jeans or T shirt first.

Thanks. I learned the lint trick back when I was a field engineer for Brown Boveri. Back in the dark ages when we drew blueprints by hand, if we ran out of drafting tape we would use masking tape after running it over our jeans to reduce the tack.
