The only way I could get to .020, was to thickness sand the thicker stuff down to that.  It works fine then.  I have never tried dying it myself though.  Constantines has dyed veneer that isn't bad, but you have to sand it down too.

Searching the Internet, I see a lot of 1/42" veneer, which is 0.024 ".

Did you try the off white fiber from BobC? In general, fiber does not take dye well so it is either use the off white or sand or plane down the 1/42 veneer to .020 .

1/42 veneer is around ~.024" so it doesnt take much to scrape it down to .020. In the GAL red books there was a plan on how to build a scraper to thickness the veneer. It is basically a fixed block and a plane blade which is set to the gap needed for thickness.

LMI sells .002 red, green, blue and yellow in varying widths but they use sycamore I believe.

here's the scraper jig I use (I don't make pretty jigs). Easy to make, will scrap down veneers well, works perfect for herringbone, etc.

Joshua, is that a plane iron?  Does it have a hook, or just sharp.  What's the angle, if you don't mind?  That sounds greedy doesn't it?

Waddy - its an iron from my block plane (I replaced the block plane iron with a Hock iron). The angle isn't very important... veer off 90 a bit on the jig and it seems to give a less agressive cut and a nicer finish.

For the blade I just sharpen the bevel to 600 grit and don't lap the back. Makes for a kind of "hook" that works really well.

That jig is very similar to Eugene Clark's - thats where I got the idea for it. He uses a particular type of plane to micro adjust though, which I think is better (yeah but this jig was free to make!).

While we're on the subject of veneer.....does anyone have a good source for 1mm veneer?


It seems as though everything is around .6mm or so these days.....I recall buying the standard stuff from Constantine's years ago and it was all .9 or 1 mm as a standard.

David, Constantine's has some veneers at 1/16th of an inch - a little thicker than you asked for though. I'd be interested in other sources as well.

Joshua, What type of veneer are you looking for. www.certainlwood.com has some 1/16 inch in poplar, spruce, maple and a couple others. It is hard to find in the exotics since it is considered a waste of good wood.
