I'm in the middle of a repair and I need a maple set for a back. Ain't gotta' be a purdy one, just need it .180 (I know, that's thick) and measure 15.5" X 20. here is a shot of the side to match up.

Try this seller on ebay, and also check the store listing for other parts.

I've dealt a couple of times with the eBay seller (bezdez) that Bill suggests, and both deals were very smooth with no problems. As I recall, he will ship additional parts for little extra shipping cost, so it might be worthwhile to look through his 'store' if you're getting a back sent to you.

Yes, I've also found BEZDEZ to be quite reliable and they have lots of useful stuff......

The best that Rick T. and David Collins and I could come up with is an early 1935 Gibson L-30 with the round soundhole instead of the F holes. There is a thread in here somewhere with the heading "Help Me Identify Old Guitar" or something like that. I'm using it for finish practice and repair practice too.

Did you find the maple back for your guitar????
I have a nice straight and figured piece of maple that I will sell at a reasonable price contact me at my private Messenger.

Hi Joe here are the photos of the wood. It is really much nicer than I thought it was.
The size is 25" X 15" total size 2 pieces thickness is .262" . Just what you wanted.

Joe, send me an email...no PMs because I rarely log onto this forum. I don't do silver maple because because IME it's not stable or attractive..not much luster.

Is it possible that that is birch? I heard tell that some of those Gibson's were made with birch. I have some birch here but I would have to sort through and saw some up to get it that white, I usually select it for colour and figure!

Hmmmm Birch. I will have to go have a look again. Maybe the flash made it look unatural? Ok, I just had a look. Compared to the spruce carved top, it has a pink cast to it. I messed with the photo and here is what it looks like, shows the grain a little better. Maple or Birch?

The pic looks fuzzy on my PC. How's it look to you guys?  Don, Let me know if you think it's birch or maple. We can settle up if you don't plan to ad any more wood to your sale thing. Shane, what do you think?  Thanks for looking guys!

I'm thinkin' it's birch. But it is always hard to tell for sure from pictures on a forum. It just does not have the grain structure I would see in maple and looks a lot like birch I occasionally cut up, and it was a used tonewood by some companies, Gibson included, around that time.

I don't know what it is, but I have some instruments going from silver maple and this is different.

Larry, mine seems great as far as stability. Silver maple has inclusions all over, which gives it great character. My wood has good flaming too which is why I wanted to try it. Someone told me that Silver finds its way onto more mandolins than guitars. A little more acceptable I suppose.

I think it's maple.  I only say that because  I had a storm blow a maple tree down last year, and I had it cut into lumber, and the parts that don't have any curl in it looks exactly like that.  I don't think it's cured nearly enough after air drying for a year to make a back though.
