Case

Ahhhh, it couldn't be any more than an SKB could it? Get Dave B. in this thread, I'm sure that's a case he'd be proud to put his guitars in.

Let's see, a hand made, made to measure, veneered and marquetryed (sp?) case, ya, that's gotta go for at least fifty or sixty bucks.

You think he'd wheel and deal if I told him I could get one from Musician's Friend for $39?

Well I wouldn't put one of my guitars in that case either...couldn't afford it! That certainly is a pretty case. A candidate for sure for one of those stupid case covers. I never could understand why you would need a case for a case until now.

Can you imagine putting that on an airplane? The baggage handlers would think they'd died and gone to heaven.

I'm just imagining the look on a client's face when you make a delivery.

I considered building one kinda like it for my Koa top, IRW Om, but when I started running the numbers on materials I was going to be worth as much as the guitar. so I opted for a Canadian.

So, I'm wondering--is that solid wood, or veneer? Seems like you could have a standard plywood case, without the vinyl covering, delivered from the manufacturer, and do some fancy lamination yourself. Yeah, I know, a lot of work, but what do you think?

I am sure it is veneer over baltic ply. If you look close you will see the sides are veneered also, so imagin the bottom is as well.MichaelP38526.7044444444

I can barely set a neck correctly and I already have purchased ply and veneer for making my own case/s. (actually the veneer was a gift). What I cannot figure out is how to do a fitted, plush interior.

Interior is just basic Upholstery. you need to account for the thickness of your batting and lining material. Pick up some litature from you library or a how to book from Hastings Barns & Nobell.MichaelP38527.3914930556

That case looks alot like on I saw at GAL's conference last year that housed a Torres that Jeffrey Elliot restored.

To get to the home page for Kingham MTM cases go to http://www.merion.co.uk/web_users/merion.co.uk_kingham/. They show prices that start reasonable but Im sure go quite high.

I have built coffin cases for early Pre-Torres romantic guitars that I have restored and took the opposite approach...rather than build a case that looks like fine furniture, I build my lined cases from solid wood and painted the exterior with milk paint which was then dirtied, scuffed, marred and shellac'ed so that the case looks as close to what a vintage coffin case as possible. It was all for show so I then had a custom cases made that the coffin case fit in...these early classical guitars are short scale around 610 mm and at the lower bout are less than 12 inches, sometimes as narrow as 9 inches.
