I'm working on a new headstock design. My old one looked a little too much like the Bourgeois snake head. OK it looked pretty much exactly like the Bourgeois snake head. Who am I copying with this one. (Hopefully no one). Any comments appreciated.

Personally I don't take much to HSs that taper toward the top, even though it makes sense for the string paths from nut to tuner. But yours is an exception. Graceful and nicely proportioned, distinctive without being gimmicky. I like it.

I like it. One word of caution, you might think of easing the sharp corners. They will be a source of getting dinged very easily if you don't. (DAMHIKT)

To that point...

I designed my headstock and later discovered that it was pretty much just like Bourgeois's snake head too (Funny how that happens when you use a compass as the only tool to design it). I was pretty bummed when I realized this, but then I found about a half dozen other builders using the same thing.

I just decided to stick with it.

But I do like your design...

A compass? I used a roll of tape and a spray can last time. This time I stepped up to a set of french curves.

And true, it is hard to break new ground on something like a bridge or a headstock...

I like it Bob, its got real promise. What I might try is increasing the taper slightly to make the top a little narrower, keeping that over design. Then again that might not do at all. Just a thought.

I like it.  Very clean lines.  Nice width.  Plenty of room for a bit of extra inlay if desired.  I don't know about softening the corners, but it sounds good.

Yea, soften the corners and then it'll look like a John Mayes head stock................ just kidding, I like it, but then again I think everything you do is a work of art.

I like it , also, and I'd KEEP the sharp corners. They lend themselves to beautifully mitered joints if you should chose to binding and purfle the headstock. And they just look "right" on this headstock. Rounded would look sloppy and amateur-ish(over-sanded)

Don't worry about knocks and dings; they'll happen anyway...

    That's a great design. I am picturing it with binding and nicely miters
purflings. Those points will really provide a nice edge for those miters to be
very dramatic on.

I like it too. It is not easy these days to come up with a simple shape that is unique and doesn't look freaky.

The inside corner on the top will be a bit of a pain to shape, sand and buff, but it is fairly shallow, so it shouldn't be too bad.

It is a shape that you may be able to hint at in other places, such as the end of the fingerboard or the bridge. That would help tie together the styling of the whole guitar and give it a nice, integrated, look.

I like it a lot, Bob. But I'm trying to recall what your logo looks like... I'd like to see the drawing of the new design with the logo included. Some symmetrical inlays might look a little odd. A signature inlay would look terrific I think, with the first letter (upper case) in the area with more head room.

I just actually did a LOL!
Most people aren't brave enough to admit things like this... But it is so true!  I just looked at my heap of a workbench until I found something round.  I think mine ended up being the 2" drum sander I put in the drill press.

I do like the headstock design.  Upward narrowing tapers and all.
