It has come to my attention that any time Ervin Somogyi is mentioned in a thread, things soon deteriorate and the mud starts a'sligning...

My solution is simple and yet very effective.

I propose we elevate ES to full blown deity status (something which isn't too far off the mark already). And since religious discussions aren't allowed on the OLF, the problem is solved. No talkie about Somogyi, no problems! There, problem solved...

On the same note, if ES is akin to the almighty, I propose grumpy as the holy spirit...

I am a little bit of an outsider here so maybe my opinion will be taken as a bit more objective than some who frequent this site. I don't know Ervin Somogyi but judging from his prices on his website, and his essays and other writings, his mastery over guitarmaking puts him at the top. There is room for others up there luckily.

Speaking from a violin making tradition, where the exalted leaders are long dead Italians, you should consider yourselves lucky. In all of the effort to copy the masters, there is absolutely no correlation of any modern scientific or engineering approach to "old Italian sound". You can argue until you are blue but you won't find a correlation.

My personal opinion, FWIW is that you all would do much better to simply copy Somogyi's (or Mario's) guitars, or CF Martin models, or any other type of sound you are after. Drop the brace measuring stuff and all that kind of thing unless it is for your own personal understanding, and work on copying guitars that sound right. Try to get them to spill the beans and give you direct info and measurements.

I think that a lot of the problems have come about because none of Ervin's students (other than David the other day) have (to my knowledge) said "Ervin wants us to keep this to ourselves, it's his bread and butter and he want's to protect his intelectual property". There is NOTHING wrong with this. But it's better to be upfront about it from the get go than to be evasive when asked questions about the course.

The OLF is a sharing community and I guess a lot of his students feel that non-disclosure wouldn't be accepted too well here.

But that's the way it is, lets move on.

Personally i am offended. I am not joking.

This forum is being run and sponsored by Christian people, Who have decided that not speaking about religion is the best way to deal with secular hatred of the same. I am offended that someone, anyone is going to compare or elevate Ervin Somogyi to the level of "Almighty" and "grumpy" to the "Holy Spirit". The use of those names/terms most certainly is Christian and not found in other religions (especially when used in connection of the Holy Spirit and the Almighty) Lets make no mistake about it. I am sick and tired of this type of slander and blasphemy. It is regulary accepted on secular TV and I for one won't be silent any longer especially here where we have rules against.

It's not funny when we draw a cartoon of a muslim. It's not acceptable when we speak of the Kuran as being a book of hatred. Yet it is perfectly acceptable to mock and denegrate my religion? talking about elevating anyone to the level of "almighty" is to denegrate and lower my Lord and God to their level and is therefore blasphemous. I am not opening this up for debate...I am stating it as fact.

Yes it was tongue in cheek, ha ha ha... it was also wrong.

I respect Ervin Somogyi and like him. If those few, can't handle our praise of him, then shut up or go somewhere else. This is supposed to be a forum that builds up, teaches, helps those in need. The last year or so it has become the voice of a few sorry bunch of illiterates.

What has it all come to and is any of this really worth crying about?

People are people. Some are nice, some are not. Some choose to be nice in spite of what they really want to do and some just don't care.

I for one would really rather not see a thread like this at the top of the page,(sorry that I've put it back up there).

Folks, we live in a world full of people that we can either choose to get along with or not. It's really that simple. We don't have to respect anyone for what they've done. Respect is always earned and not granted on merit alone.

Find anywhere, really anywhere you are that at some point in time you haven't been offended. Married folks, how many times have you felt offended by something your spouse has done or said?

No one here or anywhere on this planet is perfect, Period. And honestly the human race needs to accept the fact that we all don't agree on many things.

I honestly believe that the maturity level of many of the grown men here has dropped over the past little while. We quibble and bicker about the most insignificant things (when it boils right down to it)

This place has changed, it is no longer the small tight knit group of less than 100 when I first joined. We all know this. For better or worse it has changed that much it true and honestly no one should expect it to remain the same. When more and more opinion's walk through the door, everyone has to don a new, thicker skin because there are more folks that we will tend to clash with, this is just the nature of growth.

That doesn't mean though that the rules can be different for those with more wisdom to offer. I know that the owners have said this is true but honestly it sort of feels like there is a "turn a blind eye" or "just close my eyes" type mentality.

I'm not saying this is how it is, I'm just saying it feels that way for many.

Again, I apologize for bumping this post back up to the top of the heap but it sure is strange that there are more and more hurt feelings and more and more threads that have to deal with bickering and arguing.

This is what is making the forum less and less attractive to those who have been here for a while. Yes everyone is replaceable by another newbie. But at the end of the day, what is really important?

Everyone here has to eventually ask themselves the honest question (and answer it honestly too).

WHY AM I ON LINE AT THE OLF?

If it's to learn, than learn.
If it's to teach, than teach.
If it's to make friends, than do that too.

There have been way to many personal issues here as of late. Guys telling other guys how to type there post. Guys telling other guys to "stay out of it". Guys telling other guys "how they should respond to something". And incidences that should be done in private and not in public.

There's a saying that we all know "one bad apple can spoil the entire bunch". But I say that one bad apple is just that. I don't have to let that bad apple effect me.

I don't think I have the answers, I barely have them for myself but I do know this. We all need to be adults (for some that means nothing at all ). We all need to step back from the keyboard sometimes, check our heads to see if what we are about to type might be hurtful and non-productive to the person we are writing to (I'm guilty of this) and think before we type. If that can't happen than the poor OLF will continue to flame on with nit picking and battering and hurtful threads which honestly mean nothing.

Enough from me, I just want to learn how to build better guitars. If this isn't the place to do that (but I think it is), I'm sure there are other good places to find help.
