Well I finally applied my nose to the grindstone and knocked out another rosette and top plate for the OLF guitar.

2 questions.

1) Who is finishing this guitar? I would like to have a brief email conversation with you to tell you about a little spot that will need drop filled.. (oops.)

2) Matt, can you send me your address so I can forward this on to you?

It isn't much to look at right now, and my photography sucks, but here are a couple of images.

Another outstanding rosette, great job Brock.

heres my address : Matt Gage

a quick question, I am not sure that the plan that I have matches the body size. I would really like to be sure we have the bridge patch and bracing located properly.
are we all working from the same plan? If i remember correctly there was some difference between the outline
of top that I took from the plan and the actual body.

I definitly want to be sure that we are working with same dimensions here. Brock could you draw the outline of the body on the inside of the guitar top for me? I would like to compare that to my copy of the plan.

Matt, I've got the actual body. Do you want me to take a couple of measurements?

thanks Paul, that would be great, I seem to remember that the body was a little longer than I expected it to be based on the plan drawing that i have.

Did you notice that by any chance?

thanks again,
Matt

Thanks. The koa is not quite as wild as the last one, but it looks really nice.

And this top plate is Carpathian rather than Adirondack like the last one one.

It pings really nice....

I haven't seen any plans. It came to me in a mold ready to be lined and blocked. I'll go measure now.

I don't have the full set of plans or a template. What I went off of is this:

The top of the guitar is 6 1/4" from the center of the sound hole, and 12 3/4" to the tail. (so 19" overall). Those are numbers John gave me, but there is a little extra at each end if you need it.

Couple of things about this top. I think it is at about .13xx" currently, if you thin it more do it from the back. The rosette is ablam and I am not sure how deep the colored layers are...

The pearl is a little low in one spot (it looks like a layer might have chipped out). It looks ok visually -- it is very hard to see, but when it gets finished it will need a drop fill here.

Matt, looks like 18-7/8 length and 14 lower bout. Does that help?

Matt, do you still have the form? That should be pretty close to the shape unless something shifted or sprung a little. To help locate the bridge I think the scale is supposed to be 24.9", 12 frets clear. This guitar is pretty small and with a Carpathian top, if it is at all stiff could be thinned quite a bit, say around .100" to .110". I would definately thin around the edges of the lower bout, but you can decide that when you start flexing it and such.John How38540.4261574074

Suggestion...Let's keep this thread going with as much detail and as many pics as possible. It will help me in continuing with writing the journal and obviate the need for me to bug each builder along the way.

Now that we're not keeping it as a secret from Lance we should be able to be more "Open Kimono" about the details of the process.

Waddya think?...Secretive or Open?

Also, I called Terry at Cedar Creek Cases some time ago to let him know of the delay and also to make sure that the donated case offer doesn't have an expiration date. Nevertheless, as soon as the body goes to John Kinnaird for its marriage to his neck, we'll need to send the dimensions to Terry to start building the case. Remember...8 week lead time. I'll work with John to get that done and ordered as soon as practical.

I recently received a case for one of my Jumbo Parlor (AKA OLF) guitars from Cedar Creek so it is possible that he could use the dimensions I gave him. Basically his custom cases use the closest larger size case from his standard sizes that will fit the guitar and he forms the padded interior to fit the guitar to be used.

.... you know......

if John would be ok with it. I wouldn't mind seeing this guitar getting turned into one of those fancy sets of OLF plans.

Not to put you on the spot or anything John...

That is fine with me, just send me the $75 license fee . Oh I forgot to get my patent. Just kidding, anyone who wants can do it and if Micheal wants to do it, I think it would be a great addition to OLF's plan library. It's a nice little guitar. Just recently I did a cutaway version of it but it died when I caught an edge on my buffer and it slammed into the floor. In a fit of rage I finished it off.

The soundboard is on its way Matt.

Just a couple of things..

1) Remember thin it from the back. I have concerns about how many ab layers are left in the rosette.

2) I did not round over the sound hole. If you are going to take a lot of thickness off of it, I thought it might be better to do this after it hit final dimensions.

:-)

Happy bracing....
