Hey folks, I hope this isn't to forward: I teach at our local high school, I actually direct an Air Force JROTC program there, and I had one of the science teachers come to me today because he heard I build acoustics. Long and short of it is, the students are entering the Science Olympiad and they have to build two instruments; document the builds, and define and describe what and how the sounds are made and what changes to the build will effect those sounds.
I obviously agreed to help this group of high school students. They ahve to build the guitar all by themselves and I will supervise with the Science teacher.
What we could use are some materials. I thought if someone had orphaned sides (bent would be nice or back and maybe a top that has flaws; a neck that has some slight defects--you get the picture. Anything you don't think you can use because of cosmetic issues etc., we can use them. The kids will not be judged on perfection of apperance.
Also, what a great way to introduce our craft to some high school kids. If you have something you can donate or if you have multiple items, I would pay the shipping--its worth it. Please PM me or email me at sjkolar@comcast.net. I'll keep teh thread updated so I don't duplicate and donations.

What size guitar Scott buddy?

If you are building an OM, or wish to, I have a top for you that is ready to go.  It had one spot that I had to sand out a slight pitch pocket and that spot got to thin for my liking and I was concerned that I would see a dip in the finish (.085).  But if you brace it as per most plans (to heavy) it should be fine.  It is ready to install and has a nice BRW rosette installed.

BTW this is a great thing that you are doing Scott.

I'll take it pal. Looks like were building an OM. Thanks Hesh, as I mentioned to Ken, this is a group of 13 students that are really enthusiastic and motivated towarsd building. I may even start an afterschool program so the kids can learn and build. Nothing better than working with the kids and seeing that sense of pride and accomplishment when they are finished--PRICELESS!

science, and this is quite a wonderful thing for those kids (and you and the

Do you need any other kind of guitar parts? If so, I have two sets of “Ping” tuning machines (Chrome).
I know they’re not the best, but, they’re not bad.

Update: First, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of this community. I just wanted to claify the intent--The original plan was to build two acoustic for the Science Olympiad. This team is made up of honor students from the Science Department, and I offered my assistance to help them. However, I have 9 of my 226 cadets that are REALLY into guitar and have been begging me for the last year to start an after school program in acoustic building. With the generous donations you guys are making, I've decided to use the additional material--whatever that may be--to start that program. I've decided that I will bring some of my equipment (fox bender) etc, to my classroom and build two days a week after school. I will break the kids down into groups of 3 for the builds and when we have completed the builds, I will draw names and those lucky individuals will get to keep them--talk about something they will cherish! I will photo document the entire builds and have the students keep detailed notes on the builds. The students that receive the guitars at the end will be required to write a short essay and also write a thank you letter to the sponsors that I will post. Might as well tie into education!

I think this is an awesome undertaking! Bravo! I'll see if I can come up with a set of tuners.

   This is the nice thing about this place. While we may have a spat now and then we do all pull together for something like this

Same here...I'm willing to help, and without a doubt I've got some stuff laying around that you could use, or use for practice, or experiment with related to your sound project.

Hey John, funny thing is, it usually takes kids to bring people together, they are whats important!

I can throw together a pair of the hard(wood) parts for the science guitars. Bridges, fretboards, and headplates inlaid with the team name or what-have-you.

For the after school program, I can cut you my lowest volume prices on any parts I do.
