Yes, it's monsterous out there, and the Lane is all of a mile from my front door.   They've got ambulances and paramedics stationed right there just waiting to pick up (or just suck up) pureed surfers.   Can't imagine what's going on up at Maverick's.

In my day I wouldn't have missed this event! and I still have the scares to prove it 155 stitches between the eyes!
I hate getting older, and just to keep this on topic surfboards use indian rosewood stingers

It's calming down there now; I guess today was the big day. Tony Graziano came by and just shook his head.   I'll go down tomorrow and see what I can see.

The power of those waves is amazing, I sleep really lightly so end up awake listening to those crashing waves and I'm a mile or so from the beach (Carmel River beach).  Where are those waves when there's a surf competition?  Should check Mavericks web-cam tomorrow....

Ha, and I cancelled a trip this past Saturday. That's frightening to me. No
way I'm ready for anything like that. It amazes me that people are strong
enough to surf that stuff.

Ghost Tree was huge, too. One very strong surfer died there that day.
Some photos at www.studio458.com
surf/ghosttree folders
Now back to building guitars, something that will kill us much more slowly.

I'm sorry but when you have to be towed out by a jet ski, it's just too flippin' big.
And to keep this on topic, did you see the shot in j.brown's link of the guy diving for oysters? (or ab shells as the luthiers would like to believe he was doing.)NELLY!

I used to surf when I lived in Devon- Bude and Cryde were my favourite places; but nothing like the huge waves you're talking about here.....

Here's one, Don.

Lance, does the site you linked to publish pictures live? I thought they were different last night when I looked.

It's hard to get a decent perspective from pictures, but those boards are probably about 7' long.

Back in late October some friends and I were a few miles down the road from this when the waves weren't breaking nearly as big. One of them blurred the truth when we asked if they were experienced in the water and wound up caught out there. As a moderately-strong swimmer and personal trainer, it took me half an hour to get to them and I thought my heart was going to explode. Half from fear, half from just being absolutely exhausted from swimming through that stuff. Not for guys from Fresno, that's for sure . . .

Go here http://photos.surfline.com/ Look at the northern ca picts and see the one under the golden gate, it has to be huge for that to even break!
James the boards are more like 8 to 9 ' guns
In Oregone waves were 45'!

Those Maverick's shots are truly sick...
Steamer was all funky and choppy today. Big stuff, but they didn't look like nice rides.   Still and all, there were a lot of folks out.

Did any of you guys see the first two events of the Triple Crown? Waves have been absolutely ridiculous. The West Coast must be catching that same swell-----Snick

They were riding 50 to 60 footers yesterday, saw some possible 70s, and are speculating that there may be some 80 footers today and tomorrow when the Maverick's big wave surf contest opens for this year.

I'm trying to convince my mom and sister to make the drive with me
tomorrow. I want to experience this in person.

definitly do that James, pictures never do justice to the big waves, but take a few for us.

Haha, will do, Matt. I took a few pics last time I went because it was the
biggest break I'd been in, and they came out looking like the cute end of
a wave pool.      My sister and I are going tomorrow (Sat).
