As good of a player as that is, presenting that "tone" before a group of
luthiers is likely to cause a fair amount of nausea.

I know some folks actually like that worst-of-the-worst nasty transducer
tone, but man that sounds just purely disgusting. Great player though....

That's Monte Montgomery. An incredible talent, and a nice guy. Good singer/songwriter too. I've seen him twice, met him once. The guitar is a thoroughly trashed Alvarez-Yairi DY62C. He's just about always in the "best guitarist" lists from the major mags. But he stays fairly close to the Austin, TX area and doesn't venture out much. Plays in a trio.

I have a bootleg CD of his from various live gigs that is not to be believed. His Little Wing is great, but so is his version of Stevie Wonder's Superstition (yep, on guitar), The Who's, Eminence Front and especially Knopfler's Romeo and Juliet.

Get some Monte if you don't have any.

Awesome. Both just awesome.

Bruce posted a link to Monte's music a few months ago and I went, listened, logged onto ITunes and bought a few albums as a result.  I really like this guy and enjoy building while listening to Monte.

At one point many moons ago, I thought Monte was better than Keaggy.

As luck would have it, I saw Monte doing the "cafeteria tour" as he called it at a small local college 30 miles up the road. He was great, but his words are pretty depressing sometimes.

Well, next week we head to NW Arkansas to a little larger college who had Keaggy in for Homecoming Festivities. Was I ever wrong. Keaggy wowed us all, again. So, as upbeat as Keaggy always is, plus the incredible guitarmanship, he's still my fav.

Monte is quite the earthy guy, nothing wrong with that, I listen to both.

tone....lol...well consider the volume Monte plays at when performing and his setup makes sense and also take into account its what he's been doing for a LONG time here in Austin (hey, I'm a stick in the mud too, and I bet even though he's a 'known' artist he's not exactly rich)

I like my Hendrix from Hendrix and Hendrix only.

Oh yeah, I was looking at the guitar he was playing. Looks like it has seen its share of abuse over time. The clear pick guard looks like it did its job even though it is pretty abused also. This is just another case of a guitar sounding so good even when it is butt ugly. Makes me re think everything I know about acoustic guitars. Makes me want to make one that is then, light weight, and bling free, then finish it with some tung oil and have at it. No need for a pretty guitar!!

I wonder how the guitar is set up?  Is it low action, light strings and set up like an electric?

From what I remember Ken, it's set up heavy, high action and with mediums, except for the bass which is a heavier gauge. That's astonishing for all those bends, ain't it?

Supposedly, the early motivator for him to use an acoustic is because he plays like a brick mason, very heavy handed and he just couldn't play on an electric.
