I know I have been very quiet lately and I apologize for that. Work has been insane, and when I am home, I have been in the shop most of the time prepping for both the Miami Guitar show and also the Montreal Guitar Show, which I am TOTALY excited about.

Here are a few pictures of what I have been up too

Last night I did three rosettes, two were a very simple .125 RH AB, with a fine Koa purf. This one was to be just like a redwood OMFS I just did. .250 BRW ring with a b/w/b inner and outer purfling, along with a b/w/b/b/w/b outer ring. This is a Carpathian top.





And here is the line of guitars I am hoping to have ready for both shows, realisitcy I will probably only get the first 4 done. From left to right, Carpathian/Mahogany E2, LS/Koa 000-Omfs, Carpathian/Brazilian Dreadnought, a pair of cocobolo OMFS', Rosewood E2, a Ziricote L1Gp, and a Cedar/Maho L1Gp and sticking out of the end, a lovely set of Madrose with a beautiful sapwood accent.

Couple of side arms and one automatic...

kidding of course but I did just watch Scar Face the other night and it made me wonder...

I didn't even start building for the show yet...so it may just be some pretty wood and saw dust or maybe pictures ( blown up real big)

See you there Lance...I think this show is going to be THE BEST!

I understand we will have a huge celebrity list of builders and the Master himself...Mr. Somogyi  and

A WHOLE FLOOR OF VINTAGE INSTRUMENTS...better get that second mortgage drawn down in time...you will probably being going home with more than you came with!

My stash consists of 4 guitars. I can't tell you any more than that or I'll have to kill you.

I am building a batch for both shows. Depending on what sells (or doesn't) my line up consists of:

Mahogany (The tree) / LS Redwood (parlor size guitar)
BRW / Italian (Grand Concert - "Sierra")
Koa / Italian (Grand Concert - "Sierra")
Madrose / Adi (SJ - "Sedona")
Cocbolo / Adi (AJ - "Highland")

They are all in some form of "started" My hope is to have 2 done by the end of the year.

I have four boxes under way and they are all made out of ..... wood .... dedicated to the Sunday only crowds (its an Ervin inside joke)

FWIW, I would really be cautious of taking anything across the northern border that remotely resembles Mahogany or Brazilian RW. Yellow, white or red colored woods might be a safe bet

If I get a spot at Montreal, it will be my first show exhibiting... I must say I'm pretty exited and nervous about the prospect. I'm building an OM with an armrest bevel and ribrest bevel out of Malaysian Blackwood and Sitka. A 28" scale baritone out of Cedar and Bois De Rose is on the agenda as well:



Plus maybe one of these if I can keep them ding-less:

I'm definitely going to Miami, and on the wait list for Montreal (but losing
hope) with these little buggers in the line up.
In the moulds are 2 "Freestyles" in EIR, one with Englemann and the other
with a hybrid Englemann/White that we get from a local logger here in
OR.
The two closed boxes in the foreground are my variation of an L-00, one
with Adi top and the other with Lutz-both in plain jane HM.
The lurker in the middle is a new model for me. It's based on the "M" or
0000 Martin model. The mould is on loan from a good friend and ultimate
vintage builder here in town. I'm going to try a "fingerstyle" scale length
(25.7") with a cutout for the Fingerstyle/Celtic/DADGAD crowd. This one
is a plain HM prototype to work out some design details. I'm really excited
about this guitar, so if it flies right I'll front burner a high end example to
be ready for the show(s).

Mahogany is fine going across borders.... Raw mahogany, no, but a completed item of mahogany, is fine. Y'all are making this tougher than it need be....

Is there anything else happening there, other than the guitar show? Any performances? By who? Anything else other than guitars?

The MOntreal Guitar Show is organized by the same team as the Montreal Jazz Fest, and at the same location...

So Imagine, 3 blocks of downtown Montreal, closed to traffic, with 12 outdoor stages and 10 indoor venues presenting 500 concerts (350 are free) of jazz, blues, world beat music, roots, latin...

There are 2 100 000 people participating.  It is VERY safe.  People are beautiful.  The music is amazing.  You can drink a beer and listen to music in the streets...

it is considered by the guiness book of records to be the biggest festival.

It is also considered by musicians and the press to be the best. (OK OK I'm buyist... but they do say that!).

And on top of that, the first week-end, 100 of the best luthiers from USA, Canada, France and Germany, several top guitar guest speakers and great guitar concerts...

Yes you are not dreaming!

Jacques might be a bit biased but he speaks the truth. There's nothing better than, after a long day on your feet, sitting on your back-side, drinking a frosty malt beverage, listening to some great music that you never heard before, and watching some wonderful people. It's a great time!
Last year, we went to grab a bite to eat after the show and on our way back there was an amazing artist named Ryan Shaw (thisisryanshaw.com)on the main stage. I was just too tired to hang out. But my window was right on the strip so I fell asleep listening to him. I've since seen him in concert and would do so again in a New York Minute!

Did not know about this story... But I'm sure he never played the Jazz Festival (snif)...

But yes they are great people... the same that were the first to sign a Black ballplayer named
Jackie Robinson in a pro ball organization (the Montreal Royal!).

He was booked spur of the moment to fill in for a no show. He was little known at the time out side of the Austin seen. Yes it was at the jazz festival and no he did not play jazz. He played blues of course. That was the reason the crowd booed him so bad. The following year was his break threw season world wide due in no small measure to his controversy of his appearance and not so warm reception at the MJF and also some help from David Bowie.

The next year at the MJF he appeared again and was received like a hero.

And he still did not play Jazz

2.1 million people?!? That's reason enough to not go. Ayee!

Okee. Jazz is great, roots music is great. I guess I can side step and could avoid the world beat stuff... I have a couple Aunts in Montreal that i could stay with(hey, I live on a luthier's wages...), so ya never know if I'll show. Depends on how the summer goes.... What's the parking like? If I have my mandolin in a gig bag slung on a shoulder, can I still get into the show or will I be suspected of suitcasing and told to leave? It's just that I'd never leave it in the car in a city of 2.1 million....in summer! will my Franglais accent and Ontario plates get me arrested by the language police? <bg>

Had one of those da moments it was at the Montreux Jazz festival not Montreal

The really weird thing about being among all those great people in Montreal is that they look just like normal people, but - get this - they're all speaking French! Bizarre, man...   

Mario, most of the time, the crowds really aren't that bad. It is a lot of people, but it's spread out over a pretty big area. And it is a friendly crowd, indeed.

The best thing I heard there last year was an Israeli brass band called Marsh Dondurma. I have no idea if they'll be back this year, but wherever you can catch 'em, don't miss the opportunity!

I would recommend the subway (called the Metro here).  You will arrive right on site. But there are parkings around...

You are lucky my friend. The cost to get in the show is... ONE MANDOLIN!  Seriously, we have a guitar parking or we have a guitar registration system also... And we make sure no one is suitcasing... no problem, lots of snipers, well trained...

As for the language...  English is great, we love it!  Don't worry.  We really are friendly and most people are bilingual...

And they're is nothing sexier then a beautifull red (blonde, brown or else) head girl from montreal speaking english with a frensh accent, NOTHING!
