Tim, I don't have an outside antenna. There is an antenna on the back of the base unit that is detachable and needs to be in a window, that seems to do the trick.

I think the cost is about $30 per quarter. I have one in the shop and one in my truck and that covers both. Might be $40 now that I think about it.

Do you any of you iPod users get irritated with the 1/8" output?

I've still never owned an iPod, but people are using them for all kinds of
things that go beyond simply plugging in the headphones. In their cars,
home stereos, PA's, etc. My best friend has his running in the
background constantly with some crappy 1/8" to RCA adapter.

Why not build in some outputs that won't make you use a host of
adapters? I mean, if these things are becoming industry standard, why
use outputs most manufacturers in the home audio industry guard
themselves from with a 10' pole? Why not use a digital out or figure
something else out? I'm afraid of getting one because of signal
degridation anytime I don't want to use headphones.

The more I research ipods, I think I am leaning more towards a MP3 player like the Sony NWZ-A810, Creative Zen V+ or the 2nd generation Zune. All of these have higher performance ratings than the ipods and have more flexibility for recording and playing multiple format files.

As an iPod owner, 4 of them in the family, I agree with you. I wish I did not have iPods.

Well I turned in my list to Santa so I will be surprised when one of these 8GB MP3 players finds its way under the tree - Sony NWZ-A810, Creative Zen V+. I asked for a set of PC speakers too: Harmon Carden, Klipsch or Creative so this aught to be a fun Christmas.

iPods or any othe rMP3 players are just so much work for me.  Copy or download, and choose my music? Too much to think about!

I prefer listening to the radio in the shop.  I have an old Marantz receiver and pump it through big speakers.  I don't play it ear shatteringly load, ut load enough that I don't have to work to listen.

I listen to non commercial radio, I hate commercials!  CBC Radio one for news, arts, and entertainment news.  When I get enough talk radio, I switch over to Espace Musique, the CBC French FM network.  Excellent programming.   More music that I could ever think of looking for!

James-
From the electron's point of view, 1/8" is pretty big!
But then again, I don't use battery cables to hook up my stereo speakers, so I'm pretty 'old school'- if you had started with a Silvertone tube record player, your standards would be as low as mine, no doubt...

Cheers
John

And no, I'm not worried about the pF range of capacitance in a plug connector- my old ears can't hear much above 50 MHz.

I like 'talk" rdio. NPR, news that sort of thing and rock FM. I use an ancient am-fm panasonic radio that used to have a cassette (Any body remember those?). Works well and I could care less about dust getting in. I keep meaning to run some speaker wire from the stereo into my old 1970 dynaco A25s. but never get around to it. Maybe i'll be inspired by all of your suggestions and do it this wekend.

I'm currently using the 30gb Zune with an Altec Lansing M604 docking/speaker system. Now that the 2nd gen Zunes are out you can get a new 1st gen for a little over $100. The Altec speaker system and remote will set you back about $75. Pretty affordable.

I use a 4GB iPod nano with the fm radio remote.
I download my favorite podcasts into iTunes, as well as 800 or so songs with
different "playlists" for different moods or tasks.
I use the aux input on my shop stereo for when I'm not taking the earmuffs
on and off.

I'm using a Sans Rhapsody with 8Gb. I just go to Rhapsody and fill it up with whatever I'm in the mood for at the time. It also has a microSD slot so you can keep a few chips loaded with your favorite CD's. I also use a Logitech headset with the standard mini stereo plug Bluetooth adapter. I will never go back to a cord getting in the way again. I also on occasion plug it into powered Labtec speakers. It is really the only player I use anymore.

I get 10 hours of playback (on average) from the iPod, the interface and software is fantastically simple to use and powerful, and the sound quality's perfectly decent. No, not the best ever, but we're talking compressed music here.

I don't want a device that can record, play the radio, etc. My phone can do these things, but I don't use the features. If I wanted to record, I'd grab my minidisc player (which is still one of the prettiest little pieces of tech out there), but the iPod is great at what it does.

James: it's a portable audio device, not HiFi, and the 1/8" jack is already almost too big for the device!

I am a great XM fan. I have a small outside antenna and get perfect reception. Channel 15, "The Village" - dedicated to folk music- keeps me very happy.

Very old school here - Got an old stereo with huge JBL speakers and many, many cd's. I do have a sandisk MP3 player but the headphones get in my way so I just listen to the old 30 year old stereo when I'm in the shop.

I am in the process of running the TV cable out to the shop... Not to watch sitcoms as I slice of my fingers, but for the music stations. If you have a similar service to ours, there are about 30 stations to choose from. In the mood for soft Jazz? Blues? Polka? Feeling nostalgic for some good old Doo Wop? It's all there, 24 hours a day & no adds!
Worth the price of the cable & the effort to dig a ditch to bury it in.

Well, I got a Zen V MP3 player and Logitech speakers with a huge bass speaker I loaded a shoe box full of CDs on it already and barely used up one GB. Man this thing sounds awesome and there is no futzing with it once it is turned on. I love it. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I haven't gotten around to getting a mp3-player for the shop, but I did buy one of those Zens for my daughter and I like it (so does she!). Like Dave Andy, I still have an ancient stereo and a huge stack of CD's in the shop; I actually like to work without any backround music most of the time anyways...
