Bob, I hope your daughter is doing better today than yesterday and makes a good recovery.

The best part of a hobby is choosing how in depth you want to go. From a personal perspective, I’d say everyone should make their own neck at least once to decide if it is something you want to do again. But everyone has their own reasons for why they do or don’t, either way, no big deal for a hobbyist.

I’m not going to carve my own neck for another build or two, but I am going to try it out just to see if it is something I would want to do again.

I guess I should apologize for taking the original discussion to far. I was trying to make a point with a specific scenario in my later posts and apparently did a pore job of it.

Please note that I took no offence of any-one's opinion. But was only trying to show that a blanket statement saying that if a builder uses some CNC parts then the instruments from time to time and should call their work handcrafted was asinine.

I will concede that true not all the parts of those specific instruments were hand made, and I do see most or your point. But I was explicit with my scenario. I expressed that fact that I have built my own necks for years prior to ever using any CNC necks, and that I went over the CNC necks and confirmed their quality before ever using.

I asked a tough question that required the answer to give their opinion directly about whether the fact that I chose to use CNC necks on an equal percentage of my guitars meant that I was being dishonest by using hand crafted in describing my work and or in my company name.

No one took up the challenge to answer the question as presented. Why? Because to do so would require the person answering to make a personal judgment about me. Which gets to the crux of the point I was trying to make. That being, a simple none-personal opinion is easy to post. However to make the same opinion directly in reference to an individual is a bit harder to do. And unless you know that the builder has never successful built necks by hand and is using CNC necks to cover a skill deficiency, you are is assuming something you do not know and that you may be inadvertently defaming someone that has decided to use a quality product for the benefit of there clientele as well as to the profitability of their livelihood. However I did not apparently do a good job of this and things were getting a bit too out of hand before I could make my point so I let it drop.

Anyway I am regretful that I may have caused this issue to beyond its useful point. I hope you all know how important each of you are to me and this forum and how much this forum means to me. Everyone: You have my most sincere apology.

Michael,
Thank you for your post. I never said I would not build my own neck, but needed necks in a hurry for a particular purpose. I want to build my own necks, in fact build everything that is not metal. Life does not always allow us time to do as we with.
Regretably, in my daughters case, a CNC'd neck may be too late for my daughter.
Perhaps you and Mr. Turner could edify other 'non' luthiers by a tutorial on how to correctly build a laminated 12 and 14 fret neck.
Thank you for your comments.

Bob,
I'm so sorry about your daughter.

Here is a little help with your neck.

I make the 5 pieces and them glue them together. Be sure the pieces are square and parallel. I run then through my thickness sander.
Be careful to keep everything straight when clamping.

If any one has a suitable neck Bob can use immediately I'll buy it from you and have you ship it to him...any takers...? If you think you got it, just work it out with Bob for suitability and let me know how much. Shipping's on me also..but lets not dither about... I prefer to do this anonymous, but this needs a general call for product with speed...

If no one has a completed neck, but is a quick carver:

I have a blank, but do not have the skill to turn it into a neck quickly (I have only carved one neck so far.) But, if someone wants to start with this blank, I'll FedEx it overnight to the carver.

I have a 14 fret steelstring laminated neck in lightly curly Cherry with a Walnut/Maple/Walnut veneer stripe.

Say the word...

Dennis

StewMac Dovetail Neck

or

LMI Bolt-On Neck

Please, please,
You make me weep. You are the fellows that drew me to the forum in the beginning. (Just a few months behind the owners by the way)
Sadly, the probabilities are that my daughter will not be here to enjoy your fabulous generosity and if so, what you send will never be touched by me. Thank you, thank you.
I feel I would be remiss if I did not mention the member that took it upon himself to 'jump this discussion' edify us about who is and is not a luthier. For all I know, Mr. T is the finest luthier in the world but far from a person with humanistic values.
He reminds me of a Troop I knew in the Nam. Whether the unit was prepared or wanted contact with Charlie, he would sneak the bush and would not be satisfied until he brought everyone in the unit into a firefight. After that deed, he was not to be seen again-until the fight was over, talking of the great fight. He was immediately transferred from the unit to save him from his own and ARVIN troops. Unwanted and uninvited.

In my grief, I am sorry to say, I do harbor anger, to my mortification.
Ido not no whatt demons drive Mr. T. to behave towards others as he does. I'm sorry Mr T.

I'm sorry, but this is way over the top. We all have our personal and family issues; I know I do, and I'm going to keep mine off-line, thank you very much. Those who actually do know me know me to be a fairly private individual with a great deal of empathy in appropriate circumstances.

This was about a person who says they have three guitar bodies made that are waiting for necks from John Watkins who cannot supply them at this time. His initial post was rather disparaging about John, though most here know that John is shut down for a while.   Then came the post re. the three lonely guitar bodies weeping for the lack of necks. I was merely suggesting that making necks is a task of which a luthier should be capable, this being the "Official Luthiers Forum", and all that. Frankly, I still don't know how one would be capable of tooling up and making guitar bodies without being able to make necks; this just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not out shooting Charlie in the jungle in 'Nam, and I'm not being unsympathetic re. a relative. But both of those subject are irrelevant here in this thread, as relevent as they may be to Bob J's life and current state of heart and mind.

I'm talking about CNC and lutherie here.   I'm happy to swap kid, long term disabilities, hospital stories and how I did not sign up for duty in Vietnam elsewhere.

Hey Rick, why don't just offer to HELP Bob? That would be incredibly redeeming, and a randon act of generosity, yes?

Sometimes it's not so much what your are saying to people that matters but more how you go about saying it that will define the message they shall receive.

Peace

I do not feel the need for redemption, and my generosity is already committed elsewhere.   What's that story about teaching a man to fish rather than giving him a fish? The knowledge to make three guitar necks is here, there, and everywhere. Bob just needs to make three guitar necks. No big deal, very satisfying work, and it should be well within his skill set.

Hey Rick,
Your CNC offering did not belong nor was it invited to the thread. Trying to be right all the time must be a terrible burden.
