Thanks, all, for your comments.  Maybe I can actually glue something else before long.  Have not used glue on a guitar part since the rosette.  Seems like forever.

Good going Waddy! I hope to do a top on one of my Romanillos guitars next weekend. I have neck done, neck slots sawn (I can't back up and try wedges - I don't have enough meat in the heel block. So mine will be straight off the 1972 plan). Sides are thicknessed and profiled to shape. Back is braced. So the top is next!

Jim

It's great that you have the patience. You are going to make less mistakes.

JT, how did you profile yuor sides?  I have my sides thicknessed, and marked up for cutting, but I was just going to cut a rectangle.  Obviously the edge that will make up the top has to be square and flat, but the back edge, could be profiled.  How did you do that?  Did you use a dish, or did you just taper from the tail block depth to the heel depth?  I guess you would have to do a parallel from tail block to widest part of lower bout, then taper to heel depth (or close to it) at widest part of upper bout then parallel to neck.  Is that right, or are you using some other method?  I'd sure like to know.

Waddy shot me a PM on his question, I thought I'd paste the answer here for completeness.

Jim, I posted this on in the thread, but didn't know if you would see it before it dropped off the page. I really am interested in knowing how you did the side profiling. Following is my post."How did you profile your sides? I have my sides thicknessed, and

Waddy - I usually just cut a rectangle. Both the Rodriguez and the Reyes plans that I have used before are only moderately shallower at the heel than at the tail. The Romanillos has a much more wedge-shaped body, so I decided to take at least a little of that off before having to plane it in the form (or on a solera as I would have done before).

I just put masking tape around the side of the bending form, marked the locations of the bouts and waist, and then marked these locations on the flat side after transferring the masking tape. I then marked the depths of the sides at these locations and at the tail and heel, and connected the dots. I then bandsawed to rough shape, but I have given myself a lot of extra material - just less than would be there to take off if I did nothing at all.

I'm still struggling over whether to profile the sides on the top side, as in Bogdanovich, or to cut 2mm off of my elevated wedge on the workboard and leave the side top edge flat, as per Romanillos.

You did this measuring from the plan?

Yes, I had already built a Bogdanovich body form and a side laminating form based on the plan, so it was easy to mark where the waist and bouts would fall on the tape attached to the perimeter.

Since I'm not sure exactly how the top will contact the sides given that my geometry (spherical) may be different from Jose's, I left myhself extra material just in case.
Colin has a description of a marking tool in the tools and jig section that can be used to profile the sides relative to a dish form prior to taking them down to final height and sanding with the dish. I'm sure I'm not doing any of this the way Jose would do it.

Thanks, Jim.  That was a good idea.

Hey, it's easy, Red, when there is no glue to clean up.  When glue is applied and braces are in the way.  It'll probably be a mess.  I'll have HHG up to my elbows and all over that clean top.
