Found a stash of nice big perfectly quartered Padauk planks fresh out of a container from Africa. Was wondering if anyone would be interested in a few sets? I'm keeping a lot in storage for myself but it's a big pile of wood and I'm sure the cut out is going to be over 100 sets.

They are quartered edge to edge, no washing out to flat. If you like sapwood theres a nice 1/2-1 inch strip of it down one side of the planks.. if not, most of them are 10-11 inches wide so I can cut it off.

I should have pictures this coming week. I'll have photos of the stack of wood showing color, endgrain and sapwood tommorow/sunday.

I'm gonna pick it all up either way just thought it would be a little too much of 1 kind of wood to keep it all to myself.

The sets will probably be 40-50 a set after I get a better look at the wood and get an idea of cost/cutout.

I think I'm gonna have to put together a stack of wood for the post-HB purchases ;) If you guys haven't noticed I always put on a sale post tax season to catch those of you with a nice return Luthiers are a tricky bunch, gotta market accordingly Oh BTW I'd like all your wives/girlfriends/signifigant others email addresses so I can send them a christmas advertisement Jason38548.8963773148

This padauk I got taps like a bell, and is gorgeous, so I don't think you will have any problem moving your sets. Can't wait to finish this one someday. I may have to get more, so don't everyone buy it all up!

Jason--I love the stuff, though my wife can't stand it. Of course, that's from the perspective of the one trying to remove Padauk dust from white shirts.

Jeff, that guitar looks great. Is that a piece of Macassar ebony in the tail wedge?

I've used padouk in flattops, flatback mandos, and dulcimers and it has always made a superb instrument. Its been a lucky wood for me. I'm curious to see the price on these sets.

I like paduak, too! I've built two guitars with it so far and I like it a whole lot. It's used on the guitar that I play the most, and the person who owns the other one loves it.

If you can deal with the red dust that gets everywhere, padauk is a fine tonewood. I've built a couple of classicals using it.



I resawed this set from a nice qs plank I bought at a local hardwood supplier.

    I have used and like Paduk. The hardest think and one that is undectable is the way the wood bends. I found that to avoid cracking and grain lift issues get it up to 325 degrees F to bend.
    Below that you can run a cracking issue. I don't know why but for some reason that 325 works the best.
The grain has a tendency to lift and separate at the upperbouts. I use wet paper to sandwich the wood and carry the extra water .
   You can go to 345 but keep your temp range between 325-345 and you should have a good bend. Also let it cool in the bender before pulling and set it right into the mold to avoid spring back issues

Howdy John- glad you made it over here! Feel free to step in from time to time and straighten out things.

Let me add to the list of pictures--this one of the last Padauk guitar I built. It has Purpleheart trimmings, w/ a fine line of holly--which is a bugger to keep clean next to the Padauk.

Oh, and btw, sometimes you can find striped padauk. Check this one out:



Incidentally, I'm looking for more of this striped padauk I've got two or three back sets but not enough side sets. I think. I'll have to go through my stash and count what I have again. But if you know where I can get some padauk that looks like this, let me know.

Oh, and I'll second what Tippie has to say about bending temps. I bend at about 325F. I haven't had a problem with springback, though. The sides I've bent have been pretty stable in that regard, all in all.

Did you have any problem with the padauk wanting to "wrinkle" along the cutaway? I've noticed that padauk likes to wrinkle a bit at the waist when I bend it (typical side thickness about 0.085").

Did you thickness the lower side and the waists to a slightly thinner thickness?

I didn't have any problem bending it, and I went with a .080 thickness. Well- I did have a slight grain separating at the cutaway, but it glued back together just fine and you can't find that spot now.
