I just finished carving the back of this neck and while smoothing things out that bored neuron got to think a bit.

I'm not sure if this is really an issue, but I have seen one guitar where the glue line was right on the ridge thus virtually undetectable.

I don't have that much of an issue with the grain mismatch, but I am thinking that the higher the line ends, the lesser joint surface is left.

I don't think you have a structural issue at all. Aligning this line with the bottom of the peghead looks cleanest..............though this is why I favor the "V" joint, or a 1 piece neck shaft/peghead.

 

Thats why I backstrap ALL scarfed headstocks ... plus I add wings to my headstocks, so the side joint is buried as well.

Tony, if you veneer the sides too, it already sounds pretty much bombproof 

I guess I can glue a matching plate from the back offcuts, but probably I won't be bothered on this one. 

I assume that I changed the angle of the joint while planing the surfaces....  And probably teh stock was too thick for the initial angle

I always add a back plate as well on all my scarfed joint necks, you could still do it on this if you use a thin (1mm or so) plate. Then contour the back of the head to match.

I don't believe in anything, I simply make use of a set of reasonable working hypotheses.

I dont veneeer - the side wings end up at more like 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide - they are there so that the side scallop of my headstock shape occurs in one piece of wood - no joint lines. Plus, I can start the neck with a narrower piece, add the wings, thus tossing less wood when carving. Making it stronger is just an added benefit.
