I have decided that the box elder wood I have is going to end up as a very thin hollow bodied "performance" guitar with the body shape of the Martin OM. It will also be a cutaway. It is a design-as-I-go guitar, and I cant say what the final thickness is at the moment, but a good educated guess is that from the top of the strings to the back of the guitar will end up around 3" thick. Otherwise, it will be the same dimensions as the OM.

This brings me to the need of a case for it. I normally buy from Ameritage, but since this is a 1-off guitar it would probably be just as well off to buy a good hard shell case for it instead.

I have looked at finecases.com for a case that would fit it, and all of them are too deep, even the ones designed for thin line guitars.

Anybody got a clue where to find a case like this that is good quality but wont break the bank?

The dont give dimensions on their cases

I really dont want the guitar to flop around inside the case and I have all ideas this is about an inch too thick for what I am looking for?

  you can buy soft foam  in various thicknesses , you could cut a piece the shape of the body and lay it in the bottom of a case to make up for the dimension ... Jody

Ken, my guess is you'll have to have one made. That's the issue with building non-standard instruments, no cases fit 'em.

I agree. Then just cover a slice of good foam with contrasting fabric and glue it into the case bottom. Far better though would be having a case maker build your case to fit. Far better, but expensive.

There might be an archtop case that might get close, they are thinner, but tend to be shapely and wide too.
Or, you could build one yourself, it's been done before.

If you went with a 00 instead of OM you could probably use a Martin thinbody case if you didn't mind having Martin's name on the case. After a quick perusal of the website I couldn't find anything but 00 in the thin body style.

Thanks for the GREAT suggestions!  I'll Dont have time to get a custom made before the Miami show, especially since I am not 100% sure of the final depth of the guitar. I think for now I will take the suggestion of buying a regular OM case and pad the back of it with cloth covered foam.
