Here's an illustration from one of my research books on wood figure. It IS typical bearclaw. Hope it sheds some light on all the guesses offered up. Of course the illustration is accompanied by text providing how this figure forms in wood fiber and the altered cell structure that forms the figure itself, but all those fancy big words get boring.
