How do you manage your binding bearing set so you can find the one you want fast?

I don't have any, but size would seem to be a good choice.

I have mine on a post ( 1/4" rod set into block of wood), and I engraved the cut depth on the side of each.

I use the luthiersTool binding jig with adjustable roller guide instead :D

If I did use a bearing bit and was going to organize to know which bearing is which I would build a peg rack with several pegs and label them accordingly to the width of cut the bearing provides

do actual test cuts into the edge of the block of wood, long enough to be used as a reference gauge. Then put 1/4" dowels in to store the bearings, and label each.

I also have a little scrap of binding stored with each bearing. I simply compare the thickness of the binding I am installing with the scrap that is stored with the bearing. It is a fast way to get close.

I still make a test cut to compare.

I only need one router bit and it's where I put it down last - remembering that can be tricky sometimes though 8-)

Sadly, Dave, that's my system for lots of tools. The "MEMORY" part of that system is really an issue. Some days I can put something down and two minutes later, I'll spend 30 minutes looking for it. Big problem! :?

I'm really sad for you guys but glad I'm not alone in this problem.

As for the binding bit bearings, I keep them in a box and dump them out and dig thru till I find something I think will work, try it out and them usually go back and dig some more till I get the right one. I have been meaning to get a system going but so far have not. I like hearing these solutions though so keep'm coming.

The Fadal keeps track of all my mills pretty well, giving me more time to spend searching for my calipers and safety glasses  :geek:

The idea of cutting a slot with each of the bearings and storing the bearing behind it is great, BTW, makes it really quick to pick out the right one.

Hey Sylvan! Glad you're all moved in & got pix up of your new shop. I also liked your table saw baldes & accessories storeage too. (Not on the website IIRC)

Still enjoying the investment you made for all those who visited your shop at the Mid Atlantic gathering last year. Thanks

Timely thread! 8-)

I'm just about to embark on making a Fleischman binding routing jig thingy myself. In readiness, I picked up a 12" lazy susan, a pair of full-extension 22" drawer slides, and some UHMW material (for a custom router plate) from Woodcraft on Saturday (actually, you can see some of the parts in my new avatar!). I will incorporate storage for my bits/bearings into the tower just like yours Sylvan, if you don't mind me borrowing your idea?!

Cheers,
Dave F.

Dave -
Please feel free to use any of my ideas. After all, that is what this forum is all about!

Like Sylvan I store my bearing on the F/W/W binding jig. The difference being it's on the router all of the time. And it's always the one I need! Sylan, like all of your other jigs, this storage solution is a masterpiece.
