some gary davis and lonnie johnson stuff, using stefan grossman arrangements, then try to add a little, but how to add to those guys isn't going to happen probably, but listening alot to the cuts. stefan uses an old larson bro prairie states. incredible sounding guitars, and kind of what trying to get to, but.......something to strive for, although probably not happen

I don't really work on songs. My downfall. I'm still trying to get the right sound for playing Neon by John Mayer. I can play the song, but it doesn't sound the same.

Tracy, back in June we had a thread going where I think a couple of Turlough's pieces were listed, I know that my Planxty Irwin was there, and a few other Irish pieces. Though I tend to play more Western Isles stuff.

I'm don't get to play as much electric as I used to these days as I don't have a proper band anymore, but I sometimes grab the Strat (stock '66, same vintage as me) or the '59 Tele, crank up the Matchless DC 30 and play along with one of the Kings; either BB, Albert or Freddie. Or Little Feat. Or Ry Cooder. Or Dire Straits. Or...

On the acustic I play a little of this and a little of that; some originals, some blues, some fingerstyle, some bluegrass, not really "working on" anything. The acoustic is what I usually play when I get together with old buddies and we fool around with tunes and drink beer! I sometimes play in recording sessions with local musicans and old friends, but that is also getting rarer. I need to get out more.

Like Mario, I play more mandolin now. Unlike the guitar I'm relatively new to this instrument, so I'm learning a lot of new things all the time, and it so much fun! I'm learing a lot from Chris Thile's and Sam Bush's DVD's, but I like more to jam along with records. One Thile tune I'm working on is "Hop the Fence", great crosspicking practice.

Then there's the fiddle. This instrument I'm even newer to, but I play with my 9 year old daughter in an amateur orchestra and I'm trying to keep up with her, but there is just no way any more. We started playing 4 years ago together, and has now been promoted to a good orchestra, and her new teacher is pushing her, in a good way. Hopefully she'll be willing to continue to give ME lessons, but I'm not counting on it.

And I fake my way around the piano a little, chrismas songs and the like.

After reading the replies I can lurk no more... Been working on Sheebeg and Sheemor. Stuck in my brain since college in '81. Bromberg album. Really sweet in Drop D and nice and slow. The hammer ons and pull-offs really makeit. Old old tune from the 1700's I believe. Great Forum... 12fretter...waiting for the finish to cure on 2nd build... Greg.

Well...still working a bit on "Wish you were here" by Floyd. A great 12 string song! But lately I have been doing some fiddle tunes accompanying for my 7 year old son while he plays the fiddle. That is a lot of fun. We are working on "I's the bye" and "Bile 'em cabbage down". It is so wonderful to watch (and hear) how quick kids "get" these things!

Lately I've been working on all Doyle Dykes stuff. White Rose for Heidi is pretty easy, but Wabash Cannonball and Birmingham steel are a bit more challenging. His behind the nut bends are really cool. Doyle is a friggin machine, not for the faint of heart if you're trying to play.

Have a look: If you haven't seen Wabash Cannonball, stick around until around 2:15 where he speeds things up a bit.

I'm working on a couple of tunes from my good friend Woody Mann's handful of riffs DVD. I'm trying to wrap my mind around the DGDGBE tuning that was favored by Lonnie Johnson, among other blues type players. It's open G with the high E left at E', so what you get is the bottom two strings as root and 5th when in the key of D, but the top four strings are in standard tuning. Woody's tune "along the alley" is a slowed down version of Lonnie's "away down the alley". I'm looking forward to getting together with Woody in Miami to play a bit.
Also, I'm once again resolved to get a grip on playing in waltz (3/4) time so I can stop butchering the Joseph Spence song "great dreams from heaven".

Add to my list "Delicado" by Waldir Azevedo. It's a classic choro tune covered by Oscar Aleman, Jacob do Bandolim, David Grisman, and a big hit for...Percy Faith, with the lead instrument being harpsichord! There are a few "You Tube" covers that are nice as well. The tune has this constantly descending chord change and a nice minor section.

Wow Ken, I didn't figure you for a Neil Young man. Thats great, I just got "Hey Hey, My My" down pat a couple months ago. I like most of his tunes.

Chris Smithers version of "Killing the Blues" by Roly Sally.

I'll probably end up getting Chris's instructional video to figure this out. I've been trying for years to get that
solid bass thumb action going, but I still can't get the coordination down.

Chris is great to watch playing solo when he gets his foot percussion going along with singing and playing the guitar. Like doing 4 things at the same time. He's one of my favorites, great story teller.

Mostly old time stuff -- both songs and fiddle tunes. There's an art to playing really great guitar in an old time string band, and I've been listening to some players - e.g. Mac Benford, formerly of the Highwoods String Band, who plays great clawhammer banjo, but also excels on guitar backup for fiddle tunes - and working on those skills. Even the simple tunes can be given a lot more drive with great guitar backup, plus a lot of the tunes have really interesting changes and very quirky things going on in the meter. I also practice flatpicking some of the tunes and playing around with rhythmic and melodic variations, which can be a blast.

I'm always working on at least a couple original songs as well.

Never enough time in my life to play and practice, though...

BTW, I'm a huge Lowell George fan. What a genius that guy was. His singing, alone, was unbelievable. One of my favorites is "Cheek To Cheek", a little known gem. Check it out.

Great link! Puts a little face to a few names. My latest have been a couple of Ellington tunes. Don't Get Around Much Anymore and Satin Doll done in chord melody. Not quite Joe Pass but great fun and have taught me a lot. When the house is empty and I want to make some noise I've been working on Pony Boy on the National. Played in G tuning with a slide of course.
