Personally I think the piece is better on the lute. The guitar rendidtion does not carry across the renaissance texture as well as the lute. The guitar rendition is punchier and to some degree more sonically focused but less lyrical to my ears. I have to say I enjoyed both but in reference to this specific musical piece I can imagine the piece being composed on the lute I can only imagine it being transcribed on the guitar.

interesting comparison

Thank you Colin. Of the two, I also liked the lute much more. As one that has only had limited exposure to the lute, I always enjoy your posts. [clap] It would be nice if you could document one of your future builds for the OLF. Again, thanks for expanding our understanding and appreciation of other stringed instruments. [:Y:]

Me thinks there's a need for a set of OLF Lute plans, as drawn by Sir Colin of England. Also, said plans should be available in a kit - which should include one set of picea abies from Europe, and one set of uncarved Yew staves from Sherwood Forest or the March.

Colin, you continue to inspire us all with both your exquisite playing, and your tremendous skill at building such wonderful works of art.

Don, James, I'll look at putting together a set of plans, but the ones I have I drew directly from an original Heiber lute I had access to, I'd have to get the owners permission to release them widely. I have to hand trace each set I do at the moment, and as Dave or Joshua will vouch, that is not a small undertaking as they are very complex plans.

By the way Don, the yew for my lutes comes from a 1000+ year old yew tree (Taxus baccata) that came down in a storm in 1987, in my garden. Because of its age it is difficult to get large unchecked pieces.

Michael, spot on analysis.

Colin
