Well, I just got a bunch of photos of my latest guitar project with finish on it. Joe White has been finishing my cocobolo flamenco in thin polyester. The shots that Joe sent knocked me out. I am thrilled with the way Joe has been able to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Take a look:

Joe's finish I saw on Hesh's most recent guitar was no fluke. I can't wait to get it home and string her up.

That rosette is really good. [clap] Where did you get the materials? You should be very proud of this one. Clinton

Very nice looking guitar, Max. I'm looking forward to seeing Joe's finishes "in the flesh", because you just can't really tell from photos.

Is this polyester? Hesh had said in another thread some time ago that Joe was doing a catalyzed urethane, but I thought he was gearing up to do polyester. Maybe he's doing both - ? Joe?

Todd...all of these are catalyzed polyester. Joe did a Nitro for me last year when he still had the body shop but his work so far as a guitar finisher in his new digs has been Polyester. Honestly, he could spray anything and make it look luscious.

Thanks, JJ. Maybe I misquoted Hesh. Now that I think about it, he might have said catalyzed "poly". When I hear the word "poly", especially when it's also called "catalyzed", I think urethane. All of my knowledge of polyester finishes comes from this forum (plus a few brief discussions of it I've come across in some books on finishing), and in the discussions of it here before, I don't remember hearing it described as a "catalyzed" finish. Maybe I missed something, or that bit slipped out of my memory, or maybe it was assumed that that was understood. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that polyester is, indeed, what Joe is doing, because that's what I'll be looking for on some of the instruments I'm building.

Will any of you who are having your guitars finished by Joe be bringing them to the GAL convention in June? I want to see his work.

Thanks to you all, especially my good buddy Hesh, for your kind comments. I'll post pictures when the guitar is completely finished and strung up.

Clinton, I can't take credit for the rosette. I bought it from LMI ready made. It is a terrific copy of a Miguel Rodriguez design. It and a number of others are made by a luthier in Russia. it is the most beautiful ready made I have seen.

Todd, I may be going to the GAL convention in June. If I do I will bring it along.

Max

This polyester really does look incredible. I'm glad Rick was posting about it last summer. I'm sure Joe was already on to it, too. Results like these pictures make me a bit gun-shy to start the learning process, source the finish in realistic quantities for me, and all that, when I know I could send it in to Joe. Wow.
