I never even got as far as cutting the stuff. Just handling it did me in !!
I have never had any reaction at all to any other wood.

I wish I could build with it. I love the look and the tonal qualities.

Mark - Does cocobola on a guitar bother you once there is finish over it? I use cocobola on my indian rosewood guitars for trim, and I'm wondering if I'm building potential time bombs for unsuspecting owners down the road. At this stage, I'm just using it for bindings and center strips, but I'd like to use it for the main wood choice as well.

So far, I seem immune to it. I've never gotten any negative feedback from my body from any hardwood so far, knock on wood Surprisingly, I'm more affected by the various softwood products. A good smell of turpentine straight from the bottle can put me on the couch for the day. Western redcedar on the bench clogs me up at minimum.

I don't think cocobolo on a finished guitar would cause me or anyone any problems. It seems most people have to either touch the wood directly of breath the dust. Neither of these things are likely once the guitar is built and has finish on it.

If it doesn't bother you to work with it, I say use it. It too beautiful not to !!

If you all, like I, want to continue building with these rare and fine woods for the rest of your lives, do yourself a favor and protect your body like you are already allergic to it.

I work with and around coco everyday and thankfully have yet to find any issues with it myself. Though my boss who had no problems with Dalbergia retusa for decades now breaks out in mild hives if he is even in the same building as when this wood is being resawn. Bottom line is you never know if and when this may happen to you (I sure hope not). Don't let the sweet smell fool ya.
