Burn baby burn.... I`m cracking up, you just have too, especially when you have no idea what your doing and something comes out better than you expected.

I was hoping for something more subtle but hey....if your going to rock, ROCK!

Very cool Matt. Now the key, remember, is to not admit that you don't know what you are doing and just say "yep, just the way I wanted it" Love the color. That will rock.

Matt, that is wonderful. Where's the tutorial? Well, at least tell us how you did it and what materials and prep were involved. One minute, c'mon!

Great job, love that one. Far more ambitious than my 69 Tele Thinline Klone! You rock Matt and have for years!

Thanks friends,

I have prepared a brief tutorial, per request of brother Bruce,
1) fill spray cup with laquer
2) add dye
3) spray
4) stand back and admire for 2hrs.
5) repeat.... ;)

I know your thinking, OK, wise a_ _.

But, actually it is that simple, after the wood was all prepped, and the entire guitar was sealed, I then added the base color (vintage amber dye, with a drop of cherry red) directly into my gloss lacquer in a very concentrated mix. Spay top until you have a nice even color.

wait two hrs.... then do the same with a high concentration of cherry dye, shoot toward the center on an angle, and watch closely how much color you build up trying to keep it even around the body`s edge.

now this next step i sorta stumbled on by accident, and must add "try this at your own risk".

I had a small amout of un-evenly colored areas near the edge, that i noticed as i was cleaning the gun after the spray session.... in the gun was some lacquer thinner, and some dye, still well concentrated.... so I shot it on the edge and found that it actually helped to blend the colors even fruther,,, so i kept going and shot around the whole top, still on an angle with the last of thinner/dye combo....the effect was marvelous!

after that it`s all about building clear coats.... I do about 6 to 8.

Joe, next time i`m calling you bro.

Matt

Flame On Matt!
Good to know how you did this.
It takes some of the mystery out of it.
Can't wait to see it strung!

Nice work and great color, but that's not a sunburst.

Cool Matt, thanks for sharing your steps to flamedom!

I was surprised when you showed us the back, where's the color?

Wouldn't the back look good with the same? Neck too?

Anyway, I know you enjoyed doing it. We can all hear the enthusiasm. Pffffft! Here, I'm celebrating with you! A little early but hey, I'm off duty. bd

I meant that in the manliest, flame thrower yielding Rambo kind of way.
I can’t help it if we don’t have an expression for that.

Hot stuff Matt.

Bruce, thanks for celebrating with me... right on bro....

I decided to leave the back and neck natural on this one... I`ll admit it is unusual going from so much color to natural, but the look is growing on me.
Next time I`ll stain the back with something dark

Matt

What do you mean "next time"...does that mean you already have sold yourself, dude? :o

  "Please allow me to introduce myself..."

Hey...we may get an electric section afterall! So many twisted builders are emerging from the closet! And if that happens, we will have a chance to get Mark Swanson to chime in with his extensive expertise. :D

Matt, I think it looks great with the natural back. I would have done it the same way. [:Y:]

Nice flame/cherry burst!

I'm with the right-headed folk who like a natural finished back :-)
