I recently had the opportunity to have a recording made with this guitar before sending it to its new owner. The performance and recording is by Seth Himmelhoch.

Registro (Preludio) by Antonio Lauro

This guitar has a western red cedar top, cocobolo back and sides, and ebony bindings. At the request of the new owner, I fitted the guitar with an ebony armrest to keep his forearm off the soundboard. The fingerboard is elevated, the head is V-grafted, and the tuning machines are Alessi.

Thanks for looking and listening.

Beautiful work Gary [clap] [clap] [clap] There isn't anything not to like about this instrument. It has all of the good stuff; wonderful woods, great features, beautiful workmanship, Alessi tuners..... WOW.... just great.

Any opinions about the inclusion of the armrest? I've been tempted to include one on my next build but have been hesitant due to the issue of reducing the overall vibrating area... and possibly affecting the tone and/or sonority.

Regards,
Peter

Nice job! The world can always use more good classical guitars (already has enough Drednoughts beehive )

Is this armrest a bevel or actually a rest to projects over the soundboard?

I want to do a projecting one, but am wrestling with deciding on which attachment method I prefer.

Beautiful guitar in every way. Sweet trebles on the sound clip! Keep them coming.

My armrest design uses ebony bent in a side bender. When installed, the lower portion takes the place of the binding by incorporating it into a 45 degree bevel cut into the side, lining, and top. The armrest is pinned during gluing and trimmed to look just like the binding. I use stiff, solid linings so the foundation is very secure. The arch gives the structure strength.

The new owner likes the comfort of the bevel. While playing it myself, I don't think it either adds to or detracts from the sound.

Beautiful guitar. That arm rest hanging over the top is clever. I bet it was a bear to finish underneath the overhang.

Do you have an MP3, can you upload it without realplayer?

Thanks to everyone for the extremely kind words.
Alex: Since I didn't do the recording, I don't know the details of the set up. I will find out and let you know.
John: Finishing under the armrest was not a problem because I thought ahead and French polished that area with shellac before gluing.

Gorgeous, Gary. Your work is an inspiration to me. I love the armrest. This is probably asking the obvious: you put a veneer on it after gluing it on with the pins?

I'm on dial-up, but as soon as I get a chance to get online with a high speed connection, I'll give the sound clip a listen. I can hardly wait.

Thanks for posting!

Gary - Your guitars never cease to amaze me. You're one of my OLF heroes!

I had the same question as Todd Rose - where do the nasty pin holes in the armrest go?

Gary, what glue are you using to attach your armrest?

Gary,

Beautiful, clean work, great woods, and the best armrest design I think I've seen.
I also really like the way you integrated the back strip, bindings, and end graft.
I haven't seen that before, and like it a lot. [:Y:] [:Y:] [:Y:]
