Hi Guys and Gals(do we have any gal members?)!

couple questions

-I read many say not to use pine to sticker wood. Can pine color other woods? Has anyone actually experience pine having a negetive effect on other woods when using it to sticker?

-Let's say you have mold on set of mahogany. Can I get rid of mold by sanding it only? or do i need to use some sort of solution to kill it? Or can I no longer use this set?

I've been using pine for years...I occasionally see a "shadow' on dark wood that sands out. In general, no problems.

When I sticker stuff .. I use maple cut up from hardwood flooring waste - kiln dried. Its also what I use when baking tops. I have seen lots of pine/fir or whatever used by sawyers when stickering, mainly because its cheap and plentiful. But for luthier grade stuff, I would shy away in case of pitch pockets oozing ...

Don't sticker with green wood. Ply, ripped to square, is a good choice.

It seems to me that if you have mold on a set of wood, you have another problem which stickering won't help much until you solve, i.e., moisture. You don't get much mold in a 45* relative humidity environment. I don't know if a mild bleach solution would hurt the wood or not. If not exposed to light, it might not be a problem, and it would kill the mold, but you would have to be storing it in a dry environment.

I understand your cnocern. hOwever It's not the wood I"m storing but rather a set of wood I got today via mail.

A mild bleach solution spritzed on the mold will kill it and wont hurt the wood at all. I have used this for the wood I build furniture with for decades with no issues at all.

use a ratio of about a half cup of bleach per gallon of water.

Woudn't sanding it take the mold out too? Or do I need to use solution to kill all the mold in between the grain that you can not get with sand paper?

Yup, there is one or four of us running wild amongst all the men here. Don't assume when you look at a name that you have the correct gender associated with it. You might be surprised, and I'm not talking about Heshie either.

You could sand it, but all you would do is smear the mold around to find something new to eat on. It is better to kill the mold and sand it later when it is dead and dry.

This is what I'm talking about. I don't know if it's mold or grease or what but it's dark and looks ugly. I just did bleach test on a small spot and found the color change was minimal. Perhaps I didn't put enough bleach on it. What do you guys thinik?

My perception is that the bleach will kill the bacteria, maybe not remove it. You'll probably still have to scrape it off. It does, however have to be on there for a while to work. I'd spray it and let it sit overnight. Might want to wet the whole board to keep it from cupping.
