In a resent post the difference in attack method of finger style vs. flat pickers came up. Which reminded me of a trivia question I once read.

What did Chet the Atkins use as fingernails for finger style playing the majority of his carrier?

Actually, I have tried them. Worked OK, but I found I'm allergic to the CA. Made my fingers itch soooo bad, I could hardly play at all.

Hesh, I thought I'd take the short cut and just rub the lard straight on my stomach!

Lillian, I did not try HHG for the nails. I wonder if it would work? Hmmmm! The drying time might be a little long.

John Renbourn says he used ping pong balls too. (Don't know whether he still does). A 60's thing ?!

Yes, it was quite a common thing in the 60s especially with the classical and flamenco players, I used to keep a little box of spare ping-pong ready cut nails in the guitar case, in fact I think my old Martin cases have still got some in them. I just used to use a little half moon to reinforce the tips, maybe 1cm long. In many ways they are still the best reinforcement for soft nails or broken nails.

Don't forget at the time acrylics weren't available, the nice thing about table tennis ball material is that it is relatively similar in hardness and flexibility to real nails so you could use just one on a broken nail and still retain the tonal quality of the nail. The glues weren't so good in the 60s but they would stay on all night, quick soak in hot water and they'd come off again.
