Well, as of now, all I have built were dreadnoughts-21 of em and I have yet to see one person draw back with a guffaw on their face, then turn and run off screaming in fear and disgust with their arm flailing about in the air. In fact, they all looked like they were looking at a newborn child. We all have our preferences with regards to genres of music. I have not seen a dyed in the wool bluegrasser on stage with an *&0 or an O#######A
M#%&L. . "My" peeps want dreads! BUT, I have just spent the day making a bending form, radiusing jigs, and a holding mould for--------get this-------here it comes----------------A 000 12 fretter! Can't wait to get started! Not going to be a bluegrass guitar, though. I don't dislike any type of guitar....I like all of them. Each has its place in the music world. I do hate lute soundholes though....looks like a doily....but I respect the work that goes into them. Good place to set a coffee cup.... Just because someone doesn't like something (dread) doesn't make them a bad guitar.

Thanks, I was going to spell it dreadnaught for the next 6 months or so. Dreadnought, So I just need to put the o for "naught"

My speling is geting beter by the day!


And yes, I think electric is for mostly people with inferiority complexes. I mean, come on!

Hey, just because we've "grown up" doesn't mean we have to lose our (sometimes slightly offensive) childish sense of humor. Everyone gets to take the occasional jab in the ribs, and the ribs on a dread are just such an easy target - ba dum pum!

At the end of the day, none of it really matters all that much. Do the hungry children in Africa even know what a dreadnaught is?

Okay so here is the tally of the style instruments one or more have trashed so far:

- Dreadnaughts (Dreadnoughts) add nauseum
- OMs
- Cellos
- Electrics (many types)
- Slot heads, 12 fretters
- Banjos
- Lutes

So if we are to be exclusionary, this leaves me in the company of builders of:
- classical guitars
- Parlors, Single O’s
- Violins

Being primarily an Archtop builder (or an Archie boy as JJ calls me), I am now so afraid

As well you should be! There is going to be a Classical Builders Revolution.

The fact that it was stated in Latin adds a subtext
Well, if you don't understand Latin, I'm not going to dirty my hands on you


The motto on the Unit Crest of the 2nd Bn/2nd Bde (The Devils Duece)
can be interpreted

Don't touch me (works as a witty reply to the unwritten subtext)
or
A warning to not meddle interfere or touch (appropriate for the more common interp of your statement but not the more literal)

I think all this is really just silly. All this talk and discussion on such an irrelevant thing like the shape of a guitar body. I Mean really. Give me a break.

Such a waste of forum time when we could be discussing something important like.....shapes of pegheads. Take Martins for example. Darn near a rectangle. Now that is ugly no curves, hardly even wing fillets. What’s up with that?

OK, I'm going to plunge this thread even deeper into trivia. Turns out, there was a big debate about the spelling of
Dreadnought vs Dreadnaught as far back as 1915. There was some thought that the "American" spelling should be
naught and let the English spell it with an "o". The term was in such common usage by the late teens that even tire
companies were getting into the game, with a Dreadnaught Tire, not a Dreadnought. And the term goes back further than
battleships, there's a little Inn in the Scottish Highlands that used that name long before the navy did. I'll let John Woodland in his new book "The History of the Dreadnaught" tell the rest of that story.
And yes, Mr. Hunt from the Ditson company was the first to associate the name to the guitar shape.

I think the person unlucky enough to buy my first guitar in 1973 thought later thought he had a Dreadbought.....

OK, enough. It's really trivial stuff, I agree. However you spell it, you have historical evidence to back you up. I think
I understand why Martin shortened it to D-18 etc....
