Very beautiful guitar John. I love that stumpy stuff. I just finished a 00 of stump BZ and have one more set that I'll save for a while. I would sure like to know how you guys are getting these fantastic photos of your guitars. I think we need a photagraphy class here at the OLF. John, what kind camera are you using and how did you get that nice black background. Is it added after the fact and what other processing are you doing to the pics. Also how are you lighting the shot. TIA JohnJohn How38565.4892476852

John, RE: Photos

I have a cheapo Fuji FinePix. 3megpixals. I bought it last year in Maryland after I dropped my 2megapix camera at the World Guitar Congress. The new one was $150.

The background is a faux velvet that was about $2/yrd.

Now the lights are really something ....

Home Depot Halogen Worklights on stands, $19.99. I had one kicking around but the second one I bought was 2 smaller heads (250watt) on a stand. That one gives a little better control. The real trick is in the defussion panels that I got. Khaki umbrellas from walmart ($4.99) with a hose clamp to mount it to the worklight. I use them either with the lights facing the guitar through the umbrellas or use them with indirect lighting by facing the lights the other direction. Experimenting with light placement seem to make a big difference.

I just messed around with the manual settings on the camera (no flash) till I got something I liked.

There was no retouching on this photo, just resized it for the forum.

I hope that is helpful

Bruce,

I am not really sure how this guitar sounds as I can't play lefty. I can do about 4 chords backwards and they sound good but ....

So, you want more photos??? (Hey glad your back BTW)

Well here ya go: (I really should be working)

I kinda liked the way this shot came out too

Oh heck while I'am at it ...

Oh Stop John, I saw your stuff, it is awesome.

Here is the photo of my really high tech photo set-up. I had to take the camera off the tripod though ...(why?)

The little 13 fretter hangin there needs a little set-up and polish but it is a really fun guitar to play. I do need to take some shots of that yet.

That 3 piece headstock is cool. I like that idea. What are you cutting your name out of? Is that gold pearl, or wood?

John, I'd quit too after seeing this snakewood beauty, but I have too much invested.

Oshtoff, that's an incredible photo setup. I'm headed for Walmart, post haste.

Also, I'm emailing this photo to Frank Ford, he'll get a kick out of it. He does something similar although I think he's gone to using those corkscrew florescents. Great job. Thanks for sharing this.

John,

Thanks for the photography tips. I was wondering how to make affordable (i.e. "cheap") substitutions for pricey reflectors/diffusers and backdrops. Genius!!!

BTW, none of the oak stumps around west Michigan looks like that! Beautiful guitar!!CarltonM38565.6307291667

JohnO--Really sweet. (Both the guitar and the pix set-up.) Do you shoot at night, or do you have a room w/ no windows, or just what do you do about window glare?

SteveK.

(By the way--I took delivery of my Grizzly 1023SL today. If weight is any indication, this is one fine tool. Thanks for the encouragement.)

Beautiful guitar. Thanks for posting the front photos as I wouldn't have wanted to miss that rosette or the headstock as they are both really attention grabbers. Now, like the rest, I'm off to WalMart.
