Thinking of a 12-fret, D-shaped soundhole cutaway type. Too much too soon?

...first build was a flat back/top mandolin - second is a 12fret 000 which is going pretty well, just finishing top bracing and started the neck. need to get my wood sorted for the third pretty soon - or I'll be in a nothing to do when the 000 is drying situation.

I have a copy of Michael Collins' book on building Macs and it's absurdly thorough, so I don't think you'll have any problems at all if you pick that up. He also has a DVD set on the way or out already on the same topic.

Jim it's interesting that you are planning for the potential down time while waiting for finish to cure - I remember those days and it's a sure sign that you are addicted for life to guitar/instrument building!

thanks I've seen the DVDs, probably well worth the $150 - but I just don't ahve that money at the moment so the book sounds like an excellent idea. Thanks!



hahaha - you know I really feel like that. I hope you're right - I learnt from years of playing and gigging and some tutoring that the only reward you can expect is the one you provide yourself with - so as long as that's satisfying in itself you can't really lose - just don't expect big bucks, adoration or anything else!!! - so far it seems building is much the same - yes you may impress one or two people down the line but that's totally insignificant in comparison to the sense of acheivement you feel. Love it.

Are you going to do the pliage? I am planning on building one also, what woods are you going to use?

Hadn't planned on it - Was planning just flat (ie radiused braces glued onto top - but nothing dramatic)- but then I haven't read the book or plans yet!

...Not sure on woods, I've got some rosewood and spruce at the moment but was thinking maybe walnut for a change - last two builds were rosewood and I want some more experience - it's not like my limited 'stock' won't get used eventually!
