I finally got my copy of cumpianos book after over a month's wait.
i just leafed through some of it, and i'm wondering about the lining, he says that mahogany is used for lining, is there a reason for using mahogany, or can just about anything be used?

I'm going to make solid mdf bending forms, and had thought about routing a channel in one of the sides for laminate-bending the linings. Is there a reason for not using spruce(or any other wood) for this purpose?

Spruce is fine. Mahogany is fine. There are many good choices. basswood, redwood, cedar etc.

If you haven't yet, you might want to check out Cumpiano's website. He's posted a number of corrections/additions to the book. He's even abandoned the pinned neck described in the book and switched to a bolt-on, which he describes on his website.

He goes into it in the section titled 'LININGS' which is a couple pages before 'PROCEDURE: MAKING KERFED LININGS'. In my book this is on pages 198-199.

I like the smell of Spanish cedar.
