Has anyone used Ziricote for fingerboards, if so how did you find it ?

The reason I ask is I have been offered some but it is too narrow for set but very reasonable.

Oh and if you did use it did you use it for the bridge also ?

I've seen it used, and plan to use it, but haven't used it yet. It makes a great fretboard from what I understand, and probably a decent bridge too.

I think I will take some and give it a go, the boards in question are just over 4" wide, I could just about get sides from them but not backs unfortunately.

I've used it once. It is quite hard (it passes the fingernail test), and looks fabulous. The board I had allowed a fingerboard, a bridge, and a peghead overlay.
This was put on an otherwise restrained wood combo, and it added just the right amount of bling.

I have used Ziricote for a fret board and it realy looks great. It's hard to say what it changed tone wise because I am always trying new woods on the rest of the guitar, but it sure does look purrrty! I have a piece now that I am planing on using soon. I forget who I bought it from( definitely an OLF vendor). It was sold/bought for head plate stock, however, the piece is long enough and thick enough for a fretboard. So with a little sanding I got a nice fretboard...I think I paid about $14 for it?

I've used it quite a bit for fb and bridges. One of these guitars is used by a guy who puts a lot of miles on it, and the fb has stood up well. It hass become my standard binding material too.

At least where I get it, the price has risen pretty dramatically in the last year or two, so it actually costs me just a bit less than nice ebony.

Good question, I'm curious too. I got a Ziricote fingerbd from Brad @ ASIA. I intend to use it. I don't have a jig or saw to saw the fret slots though. Any volunteers?

I'll definitely post pix when I use it. I'm finishing a Grenadillo gtr right now, it's getting a different trim package. (I'll post those pix too.)

I would do it for you but the postage would be a bit much, as I am in the UK.

The other thing I was wondering about Ziricote was the effect on the tone as opposed to conventianal Ebony (if there is such a thing). Dave said in his case it was inclusive because of the other variables in his design. My reasoning was this, I will admit I have only heard one instrument that was made of Ziricote but that was extremely bright. So I read in another post people talking about the dampening effect of Ebony, I wondered if a Ziricote bridge would be more akin to a rosewood or ebony bridge. I will confess I am not a really technical builder, so maybe my logic is flawed here.

What do you think ?

My take on Ziricote tonaly is that it is somewhere between Cocobolo and Ebony ( or Macassar Ebony). It is hard and dense. I have not done any density or weight testing on it so I can't realy speak technically about it's composition. But I like it alot!

Terry if you are not in a rush, and you want a standard neck length ( something I have...I have several), I would be happy to slot it for you.

p.s. as far as the Coco compare goes... similar to but without all the itchyness...man am I alergic to that stuff ( the COCO). I love it but I just look at it and I get a Rash!!!Dave-SKG38567.6862615741
