True waterfall figure does change some with grain orientation, but shows "best" of figure description on flatsawn faces. Veneers are flat or crown sliced or log rotary flat peeled to keep the figure integrity. This of course makes it a bit squirrelly from time to time with it's non specific grain undulations. I've always preferred cutting this figure type for solid body instruments.

The middle board in the three bubinga board photo is 14" wide and about 10' tall. Raw timber in one of my storage buildings.

Shane, your pics look more like pommele figure than waterfall figure..more rare and costly than either curly or waterfall!!! Flatsawn?

Right you are Larry!! (as usual! ) It really is pommele but I wanted to show the wide range of figure that is available. I am going to use a set later this year because this stuff will be absolutely 3D under a gloss finish. The wood is, as with most (maybe all) quilt figure, rift to flatsawn.
