I would like to extend a very warm welcome to Ed and the gang at Clear Vue Cyclones.

Ed's company is making products based on Bill Pentz's dust extraction research. http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm. For those of you who don't know, Bill is a wood worker who through years of exposure suffered severe health problems due to wood dust, and this inspired him to conduct an exhausting investigation of dust removal. His web site is a vast resource.

Ed's company builds products based on Bill's research and designs and IMO his systems are barre none the best.

I first came in contact with Ed's products via Tim McKnight ... and I will tell you, after seeing his system in action I knew that I had to get one of these. I ended up getting both the mini cyclone for my shopvac, and the big system to hook to all the stationary tools.

I was thinking about one of the cyclones. I watched the video, but I don't know how small the particle size is. Will it trap the fine dust from a drum thickness sander?

Maybe a review would be helpful for others

The Pentz design was tested at Johns Hopkins University (in the form of the Mini CV06). Their results, posted on our website, show that the cyclone separated out 100% of the dust down to 5 microns. Visible dust is 10 microns and above. Our cyclones do a great job of getting the fine stuff before it reaches the filters. We do MDF on CNC routers. We can produce several 55 gallond drums of MDF dust in a week and we haven't cleaned our filters in several months. Hope this helps.

I will for sure look and investigate this product, but maybe a couple of questions I have and maybe others can be answered here.

I as all other builders (luthiers and otherwise) I think fight dust and its effect on everything is the shop. I do exclude Hesh in this as I am convinced he is the son of Anti Dust Gods. He is the only shop I have seen (although only photo's) who could be building and at the same times have Dr's. do surgery.

Do these units suck in dust that is in the air or just sucked from machines? I am needing collection that takes dust out of the air and do machine collection also. I have only now a garage and about 380 sq. ft of space. Just the air dust is a problem for me so have been looking for system that does that. I think know from other threads this will work for vacuuming down shop of dust from tools, counters and other things. Need something like the units that hang from ceilling or on benchs that suck (or supposed to anyway) dust out of the air. I think this has a smaller footprint also so not take up as much space as my current bag type collector is that right?

This is only an observation, but if you remove all the dust from the machine, or the sanding area, you will, most likely, have no dust in the air. Otherwise, use a system like Grumpy built with a furnace fan and multiple filters, that pulls shop air in near the floor, and re-distributes it near the ceiling in multiple directions, creating, sort of, an air cleaning circle. Dust always settles down.

Bill Greene's shop will stand up to the Hesh test. His system moves so much air, you can't even smell the wood when he's sanding it on his 4x36" sander. His collector is outside the shop area.

You will need a secondary air filtration system to get all of the dust out of the air as Waddy mentions. I bought a delta whole shop filtration system for this purpose, and it is amazing how much dust is in the air in the shop! I have now eliminated most of that dust in the air by building myself a sanding table which is hooked up to the clearvue system. I just have to retrain myself to use the sanding table while I am doing ALL of my sanding

OK, what are the advantages of a similarly sized Clear-Vue over an Onieda?

If I use the mini cyclone on a shop vac, how much suction percent wise, will I loose?

Good question David.

I have a couple of shop vacs that I don't use because they were really nothing more than a strainer, at least the ones that I have were. And when I put a HEPA filter on them which are pretty pricey the HEPA filters would not last through an entire guitar build...

I am thinking that if the mini traps every thing but the less than 5 micron dust this would greatly extend the life of the Hepa filters and it might be worth using the shop vacs again perhaps dedicated to a specific machine.

I have a 24x36 shop that has a cement floor and I am terrible at keeping it clean. It gets pretty thick before I get around to sweeping the floor but when I do all I usually acomplish is picking up the big stuff and end up just pushing the dust around. I tried using the shop vac and it would just clog time after time. Now since I have the mini-cyclone on the shop vac, I can actually pick up the dust and I don't loose any suction that I can detect. The filters never clog and I am a happy camper again. Unfortunately it just doesn't last but . Anyway the mini works great and one of these days I'll get the big guy too.

how long of a 2.5'' hose can u run with the mini on a shop vac

No idea "how" long, but mine is 9 feet, with no loss of suction that I can tell. The mini is great, and I've done exactly what Hesh is talking about. Bought a Hepa filter, and use the mine and it captures everything...and I mean everything. I have dedicated 6"+ drops for all my big tools, but I use the mini cyclone all the time for cleaning up, etc.

The clear vue is great, really. I will tell you that if you go the Bruce Dickey route, and make a vertical stack (which I did), make durn sure you pick up a VERY sturdy container or you'll collapse that puppy faster than you'll be able to turn the switch back off. DAMHIKT
