I am getting some mixed information, and being a newbie I would love the
groups feedback.

Do all of you glue your bridges with hide glue?
Do any of you use titebond for the bridge?
Does anyone use the premade hide glue made by the titebond people?

I use Hide glue for just about everything.
I don't use Titebond for anything.
I have never tried the pre-made hide glue as the fresh hide glue is easy to use.

Hide glue...mix your own...I use it everywhere except FB to neck.

have used titebond, lmi white instrument makers and hot hide glue for bridges with no problems. use mostly the lmi stuff now.

do not use the packaged liquid hide glue for anything more stressful than tacking the nut in place. the preservatives thet keep it from going off also greatly compromise its usefulness.

I was interested to read your comment on the pre made stuff, I was using it for fingerboard extensions, but had some issues on the last one I did. So I glued up some test blocks and wasn't happy with the results, even after a week the bond strength is not good. I wouldn't use it on a bridge, thought it was me doing something wrong but maybe it is the glue its self.

Liquid hide glue is not as strong as mixed hide glue. It has some great uses but few in instrument building IMO.

I have used both hide glue and titebond. Either is acceptable. I like hide glue better because of less chance of creep.

I really like the LMI glue for almost every application where glue is needed. I did talk with someone yesterday that uses super glue for his bridges, but I don't think that's a very good idea at all.

I have mixed my own hide glue on my first, and on the 2nd I used Old Brown Glue, which is hide glue in a bottle, but handmade in small batches to be fresh. This gives a 20 min open time and easy to use. I have had my bridge on over 6 months and not problems. Also, I removed my bridge and FB extension that was glued with Old Brown Glue and it was really easy to remove. My next guitar I will use Old brown glue for everything. Good luck!

Tracy is this a brand name. The only botteled hide glue that I am aware of is Franklin's Liquid Hide glue, and my un-sientific shear and heat test shows that it less shear and heat resistance than mixed hide glue. I love it to use as lay out glue, like in bonding inlays to hardwood mat-boards to make friendly plastic molds for my pin router and building assembly jigs

I'd like to try the stuff too.. might be worth the $8

Thanks John. I will get an 8oz bottel and give it a try, hopfully it is better than the Franklin's.

Thanks John, that is the stuff. I talked to this guy about this glue and he is a hide glue expert. He says several violin makers are using his glue. I have had good luck so far with this glue. On my next I'll find out how good it really is. I'll keep you posted.

I use hot hide glue when I build a violin and either for a guitar. I have also used "fish glue" It's terrific and has a history in the pipe organ business. It doesn't creep when you clamp up as bad as titebond. I would use it for everything but titebond dries quicker and lets me get to the next step. Fish Glue takes longer to set-up.

IMHO liquid hide glue is only good for maybe gluing in your lable.

either works. depends how fast you think can get the hide on. titebond will hold and no problem

I vote for Titebond. I`ve never had a problem with it but I did have a failure the only time I used hide glue. Probably my fault, glue too old, improper mixing or handeling etc. But you know what they say. Once bit......
