We Bend the Wood, So You Can Bend the Strings

I like a 4' X 4' table at 38 - 40" tall. I have a shelf bench 2' wide along the wall but it ends up holding tools, books, coffee, supplies, radio....

Mine is a copy of the Lee Valley workbench, two slabs separated with a tool trough in the middle (highly recommended) and four rows of 3/4 round bench dog holes (a must for helping secure jigs and stops). I built my own side and double end wood vise, and have a guitar body vise at the other end. the only thing I havent done is completely fill out the bottom with drawers, its still open with a couple shelves. Maybe this summer ...

I don't know how to put pic's. I use old kitchen cabinets find at cabinet shops when they take out older ones to put in new ones or from motels when replacing same kind of stuff. I buy solid core doors from Home Depot or Lowes, and set them on cabinets. At times I may make a base for cabinets just to raise them some. This gives me seveal work stations and storage for tools dedicated to those stations. Takes less room for me than long benches along wallls and then allows me a main bench of about 38" x 80" sort of middle of shop. My shop is about 400 Sq. Ft. but works fine until can get bigger space, so getting as much storage as I can is important. I am getting old motel a/c & heating unit to install in exterior wall. By the way I have been able to get the cabinets free for hauling them off, as they have to despose of them anyway.

All this should be in the archives but making simple particleboard boxes, bolting them together in whatever configuration you want, and topping them with two or three layers of the same or melamine makes an island bench that is a real tank. You can put 5/16" carriage bolts in T nuts in the bottom for easy leveling. Hang your go bar deck from the ceiling above one of the islands. Like Stan said, get used or prefab kitchen cabinet bases for wall benches and storage and top them with particle board. Works for me.
