I am considering options for my first solo build since my son and I spent a week with Kevin Gallagher.

I have looked at many shapes and many brands for ideas and seem to like the shape of the Gibson CJ-165.

I'd like to be able to get it into my computer and play with the layout and shape to make it my own. I don't really care about their bracing design, etc - as I will be using my own for this part.

Does anyone know how I can get this information other than making a fool of myself with a large piece of paper rolled up in my pocket when I go to my local music store? I'm thinking they wouldn't be real crazy about me laying a guitar on the floor and tracing it. LOL

Let me be clear that I do NOT intend on a direct copy of the Gibson design - nor do I want to illegally take something that is not mine.

I just like the shape of the guitar and thought it would be easier to use it as my starting point for MY shape.

Thanks

Hi Paul,
I just completed a similar project! I ordered plans for J-200 from LMI. I took that along with the dreadnought plans I already had, and traced both onto parchment paper, then I overlaid a third blank piece and sort of blended both together, adding my own touches... I call it the Jumbo-nought

Here is a pic before I applied the finish. It's now 99% complete. I strung it up last night for the first time, I still need to intonate and give it a final buff. I haven't taken new pics yet. I'm happy with the sound so far. It's got a lot of bass which I was expecting from such a large body but to my surprise, strong clear highs as well. I'll know better when I get the final setup completed.

Cheers and good luck with your project!
Chad
