Hi everyone... working on setting my Les Paul up with 11's now. Yes, after playing acoustic for so long the 10's feel like they aren't there and I'm used to fighting them... HARD. All that said, the pickups in my Les Paul were custom wound from vintage magnets left over from deceased original PAF humbuckers. They are completely microphonic, as is my wish. I've adjusted the edge polepieces as far down as they will go and to the factory specs of distance to the underside of the strong both at the neck PU and bridge PU. Now, how should the polepieces be configured-- conforming to the radius (i.e., the same distance from the polepiece to the bottom of each string) or staggered like a stratocaster pickup (i.e., some higher than others)? If they should be staggered, can anyone provide me with a good measurement of distance from the top the the polepiece screw to the bottom of the string for all six strings on both pickups? Incidentally, I may decide to go back to 10's later... I'm missing the screaming notes coming from the E string now that I've restrung with 11's... I guess sometimes heavier is not necessarily better, but for the moment, I'm relatively satisfied. With the polepieces conforming to the radius (so to speak), the guitar is very dark sounding and I really miss the bell-like ring of the highs.
May have to do some more adjusting. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Also, please forgive me if this is not posted in the correct place, as it does pertain to an electric instrument rather than an acoustic. Thank you all!!!!
