I know there's been some discussion of this, but I couldn't find it in the archives. What are those that are using HHG using for a glue pot?

Jimmy I picked up a Rival Hot Pot a few months back at a garage sale. It works great and sure beats paying over $100.00 for a 'glue pot'. I think you can find them new for less than $20.

Hi:

For the users of crock pots for hide glue, how do you control the temperature? I did buy a crock pot from a local good will store for $10 but it, like all of them there, had two temperature settings. The "high" setting was around boiling and the "low" setting was around 120 degrees F. I do not mean to sound like Goldilocks here but how to get to and hold the correct temp?

Are you talking about a "glue pot" that a production or large repair shop would have kept in days of yore, filled with glue and a couple of glue brushes sticking out of it?

If so, I'd go for something like this at LMI, with temp control.

Open pots like these add that special "hot hide glue ambiance" to any shop!

For temperature control on my cheapo Rival crock pot, I use my router control from my bending blanket. I seldom need to glue and bend at the same time.

The other option is a baby bottle warmer. About $16.95 art Wal Mart. Will keep it on temp all day, if you don't mind the look. Has a temp knob that works great. You just have to add water from time to time, as it evaporates or cooks off.

Another vote for the baby bottle warmer. I bought mine off Ebay for about $5. It will hold the glue temperature to with a couple of degrees F all day long.

I bought a leg wax warmer on ebay pretty cheap.And didn't my wife's eyebrows raise when I walked through the door with that .

Most of these things have a little pot inside them where you can set the temp. I don't use the temperature knob on the outside of the thing, I turned the knob up to 10 and pulled the cover off and set the temp internally with a decent thermometer in the water bath. It'll never overheat my glue, stays at between 60-62 deg C. Gotta be careful while you do this 'cause you're mixing water with exposed electrical terminals, but it's much better than using a sharpie to put marks on the knob and having to check that the marks are lined up everytime you use it.

I took mine apart, found the trim screw, turned the main control all the way up, and adjusted the trim till the temp reduced a bit. Not perfect, but cheap

I've been using a Presto Fry Daddy for a few years. Removed the bottom, located the thermostat, drilled a hole in the bottom over the thermostat, adjusted it to stay 140 degrees.

I use the smaller sized Rival Hot Pot and it works great. Prior I bought a crock pot "Little Dipper" as recommended here on the OLF and mine ran to hot, I could not get it under 155F so I pitched it.

Parent's Choice baby bottle warmer. Has three temp setting, #2 keeps it at 141F +/- 1 degree. I had a digital thermometer that will log highs and lows. Had it in there for over an hour so I could see how it was cycling. I started with an older Rival hot pot that did a 20F swing. Tossed that puppy.

Don't be fooled by a "Rice Cooker." I got the small rival rice cooker with two temp settings. It runs hot for this purpose. Of course I have never actually gotten to the point of using Hot Hide glue yet, but now can officially cook rice. All in all, not the same as a crock pot.
