As for abrasives getting clogged, something that I do is frequently clean it with an old rubber soled shoe. When I see buildup, I reach for that old work boot and grind the edge of the sole into it, and the rubber seems to pull the buildup out. One does have to clean up the crumbs that are left over, as they will hold your workpiece off the table just enough to cause headaches (how do I know this?)
   I ran accross this tip in a Dear Abbey column a couple years ago. While it doesn`t eliminate the problem altogether, it will make the abrasive last longer, and are cheaper than the rubber cleaning sticks.
I get these innovative and valuable tools by the pair, and they do have some mileage and a peculiar odor when wet, but if anybody needs one, get ahold of me and I`ll send you one just like the one I have!
