Bent some coco with w/b/w purflings last night. (.030 or so?) Went like this:

tape binding/purflings packet together
moisten with towel
wrap in moist paper towel
wrap all in alum foil

with single heating blanket on top, sandwiched between slats:
bend at 300*-310* for 10 min, cool
1-2 hours later, repeat heating cycle
2 hours later,remove from bender
find kinks upper bout, on the inside mostly
clamp in body form to finish drying

What caused the purfling kinks? They were only slighly wider than the zoot bindings...Terry Stowell38569.7941319444

Terry,

Did you bend it as one big sandwich of binding and purfling, or did you lay them out beside each other? I do mine the latter.

one thing that makes this problem exaggerated is leaving the side
purfling full height. If you sand them to .060 or whatever the depth of
your channel is then this gets reduced drastically. You can flatten these
waves out with a clothes iron though. I show this in my latest binding
video, as it is a common occurrence.

side by side. I'd have liked to sand them to the thickness of the binding, prior to bending. My bindings were pretty warped to begin with, so I had to tape them side by side to get everything to stay in line. So with tape on, I just didn't think it was worth scraping/sanding down, moving the tape etc.

Thanks John, good tip. My binding is .080, and the side purfs are almost .100, kinks don't surprise at that width I guess
