I want to do a 12 fretter with a slotted peghead. What should the final thickness, including overlay be? And what would be a fairly good selection for tuning machines? I know the Waverly would be my #1 choice but they are not in the budget. I was thinking maybe the Grover ST's but have never used these. Any opinions anyone.

Well .. first some advice ... dont thin the headstock to a thickness until you know the tuners you are using ... the plates can vary in width. It will also depend wat you want to see from the side of the headstock (are you using colour veneers under the top and back plates ??) - I just did one with a black and maple veneer under the braz top and back plates .. and I want to see them after the 3 a side tuners are installed .. so you need to take that into consideration.

As for tuners .... I would use Gotoh 700 series over the Grovers any day ...

Thanks Mr. Karol, It should have been obvious to me not to thickness until I had the tuners. Guess I just had a DUH moment. I'll see if I can locate the Gotoh 700 tuners..;

I looked at the schallers, and they are a nice looking tuner but, a little too much engraving for this application. I would like to stay with the single tuners instead of the 3xp.

These are my favourite slot head tuners for a steel string. Rubner, made by a small German family firm, very nice and resonably priced. I don't know if you can get them in the US though.

I don't believe in anything, I simply make use of a set of reasonable working hypotheses.

Here's mine in the rough. I planned the thickness so the maple veneer would not be covered by the tuning machine plates.
