Greetings,
For those of you that attach your purfling to your binding prior to bending and installation, how do you like to do it? (e.g. bwb fiber stuff) I've been clamping it on with those little office supply paper spring clamps and running thin super glue between the clamps and then taking them off and hitting the spots where the clamps were. It's a little tedious. How does everyone do this?

If get the question right, you can glue it using one of those stew mac glue binding laminator things (or build one) We do it with plastic and wood bindings this way. Just cut the purfel to the same width as the binding and glue it on with CA (we use thin) Also can thin down to make or buy veneer and laminate that to your binding. Then make good edge and saw that into strips. On the plastic stuff have sheets of it with varied combos (b/w/b or vs.) and thickness. We cut it to whatever sizes we want. I even think of what scheme I want and make a small cutting of it to fit my channel or see how I like it.

Hi Terence:

I use those binder clips from an office supply place (~1.25 inch wide) and just plane wood glue (PVA). Just add glue, set them out on news paper, press both pieces down against the surface and place the clips side by side. This gives you one side that has binding and purfling flush to each other, the other side doesn't have to be flush because it is the "show" side that faces out when you glue them into the binding ledge. You scrap the show side flush with the side of the body after you install the binding/purfling on the body and the glue dries.

The only things you have to remember are:

1) Bend the strips so the flush side is the glued side with respect to the binding ledge.
2) Don't add too much heat when bending, or the strips will de-laminate.

I have a little jig made up - its two 3/4 square steel tubes, about 34 inches long, with 1/4 inch holes every 4 inches or so lined up in each tube, on centre. I have 1/4-20 bolts and wing nuts that go thru the holes, so now you have a 34 inch long clamp - glue the purf to the bottom of the binding, them set it on its side in the clamp - the bolts allow you to push both pieces flush against them,then tighten up the wing nuts. I use TB and leave each piece in for about 20 minutes or so, then do the next one.

The easiest method I have tried is to start with a stick of wood that is dimensioned with the correct height of the binding, but wide enough for several pieces. I glue a sheet (or two or three, depending) of veneer to what will become the bottom of the binding. I then slice this stick on the table saw, and I get several binding strips with side purflings, ready for bending.

I use regular wood glue and then just use small pieces of masking tape to hold it in place. I work on an old piece of formica countertop, so the glue doesn't stick to it. Lately though, I have been leaving it separate to make it easier to do mitered joints at the wedge and backstrips, just gluing it at the same time I install the bindings.
